What it does## Inspiration

Food is part of everyone's daily life, but many people do not know what their meals actually provide nutritionally. A person can look at a plate of food without easily understanding its macronutrients, micronutrients, dietary characteristics, or the nutritional role of individual foods.

As a BS Human Nutrition & Dietetics student interested in AI and health technology, I wanted to explore a practical way to connect nutrition science with the technology people already use every day.

I started building VitaVue on 25 August 2026 as a solo project. The goal was to create a simple experience where users can move from seeing their food to understanding it.

The Solution

VitaVue — Where Nutrition Meets Intelligence.

VitaVue is an AI-powered nutrition intelligence web application that combines multimodal meal analysis, structured nutrition information, conversational AI-assisted reasoning, and evidence-oriented nutrition education.

The main workflow is:

See → Analyze → Understand

A user can upload a meal image to the Multimodal Meal Vision Analyzer, where the system is designed to identify food items, estimate portions, and provide nutritional information.

Users can then explore the International Food Explorer, which currently contains 64 curated foods with nutritional, dietary, micronutrient, and glycemic information.

The VitaVue Intelligence Agent provides conversational assistance for nutrition questions, including topics such as protein quality, amino acids, leucine, micronutrient interactions, and food-matrix digestion.

The Evidence-Based Nutrition Hub provides educational nutrition content, including 8 science articles and 8 myth-busting articles.

Why It Matters

VitaVue focuses on nutrition awareness as part of everyday physical well-being.

Instead of requiring users to search through separate nutrition resources, VitaVue brings meal understanding, food information, and nutrition education into one interface.

The project is designed to help users:

  • Understand what foods in their meals provide
  • Explore nutritional characteristics of individual foods
  • Learn about important nutrition concepts
  • Make more informed everyday food choices
  • Build greater awareness of their relationship with food

VitaVue does not diagnose diseases, prescribe treatment, or replace qualified healthcare professionals.

Technology & Innovation

VitaVue combines:

  • AI-assisted nutrition reasoning
  • Multimodal/computer-vision concepts for meal analysis
  • Structured food and nutrition data
  • Conversational nutrition intelligence
  • Evidence-oriented educational content
  • Human-centered web interface design

A key design goal was to make the system more specific and less prone to generic interpretations. The meal-analysis workflow includes image-based processing and state handling, while the nutrition agent uses prioritized food matching so specific queries such as food combinations or preparations can be distinguished from broader food categories.

The project also emphasizes responsible output: nutritional information is presented as informational guidance rather than medical diagnosis or guaranteed clinical advice.

Development

I developed VitaVue independently as a solo project beginning 25 August 2026.

My work included:

  • Defining the project concept and health problem
  • Designing the user experience and interface
  • Developing the web application
  • Building the meal-analysis functionality
  • Structuring the food and nutrition information
  • Developing nutrition-intelligence features
  • Creating the educational content structure
  • Testing, debugging, and refining the system
  • Preparing the application and demonstration materials

The development process involved learning and combining concepts from nutrition science, AI, computer vision, web development, and product design.

Challenges

The biggest challenge was bringing several different areas together without making the application confusing or misleading.

I had to work on food-specific interpretation, meal-analysis behavior, application state, nutritional calculations, structured food information, conversational reasoning, and the overall user experience.

Another important challenge was deciding how an AI-powered health application should communicate information responsibly. VitaVue therefore focuses on nutrition education and informational insights rather than making clinical claims.

What I Learned

Building VitaVue taught me how to translate nutrition-science concepts into a practical technology product.

I learned that creating an AI health application is not only about adding AI features. Data structure, specificity, user experience, testing, responsible communication, and clear limitations are equally important.

The project also gave me practical experience combining my academic background in nutrition with AI and software-development concepts.

Future Development

Future versions of VitaVue could include:

  • Larger and more rigorously validated food datasets
  • Improved food recognition
  • More accurate portion-size estimation
  • Stronger nutritional-data validation
  • More personalized nutrition insights
  • Expanded evidence-based educational resources
  • User testing and usability evaluation
  • More comprehensive AI/ML evaluation
  • Mobile application deployment

Impact

VitaVue aims to make nutrition information more accessible and understandable for everyday users.

Its potential impact is to help people better understand their food, improve nutrition awareness, and make more informed choices through an accessible technology interface.

The current project is a prototype and should be evaluated further before being used for clinical or individualized medical decision-making.

Project Vision

VitaVue connects what people see on their plate with the nutritional knowledge they need to understand it.
