Inspiration
This name derives from the Latin word vitalis, meaning vital or essential. It reflects the importance of your solution for people’s health and well-being. Vitalis, in our case, is an acronym for Virtual Information and Telemedicine Assistance Line. Vitalis is a one stop health solution to help users to access, manage to health related information and records, access health information through chats, bots and personalised health recommendations and access to health community through community groups and discussions. Users can also be made aware of the health facilities around them. The inspiration for Vitalis came from the healthcare challenges faced by individuals and communities in Africa, including inadequate health infrastructure, limited access to essential medicine, and low health literacy. We recognized the increasing access to affordable digital technology as an opportunity to address these challenges and improve access to health information, products, and services.
What it does
Vitalis is an innovative digital platform designed to improve healthcare access and promote health-seeking behavior among individuals and communities in Africa. Vitalis utilizes cutting-edge technologies such as chatbots, personalized recommendations, and community chats to provide users with personalized responses to their health-related questions, access to basic health information, and essential health services.Users can also keep managing their own records that are updated upon every hospital visit. Our platform also helps improve health literacy, empowering users to take control of their health and reduce their risk of non-communicable diseases. With Vitalis, we aim to bridge the gap between inadequate health infrastructure and quality primary healthcare by leveraging the power of affordable digital technology.
How we built it
We built Vitalis using a team-based approach, with each team focusing on a specific aspect of the app's development.
There were three major teams, that is, the Mobile team that was responsible for developing the app's user interface using Kotlin, the backend team that developed the app's APIs using Java Springboot framework, and the bot team that developed the chatbot feature using Azure Healthbot.
Vitalis has these main features:
- Chatbot Vitalis has a chatbot that helps users to access health information and services. It is a virtual assistant that can be accessed through a chat interface. The chatbot can be used to access health information about symptoms, diseases, treatments, and health providers.
- Personalized recommendations Vitalis provides personalized recommendations to users based on their health records and health history. It also provides personalized recommendations based on the user’s location and the health facilities around them.
- Community chat section Vitalis provides a platform for users to interact with other users and health professionals. Users can also join health communities to discuss health related issues and get support from other users.
- Health records Vitalis provides a platform for users to manage their health records. This way users can keep track of their health records and can also share their health records with health professionals.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main problems was time management. Being students with school work, incorporating the game of learners hackathon in our schedules was a bit of a hassle especially in the beginning. This however became easier as we got through the various sprints.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
One of the major accomplishments that we're proud of is the development of a comprehensive health application that addresses the challenges faced by individuals and communities in Africa. We are proud that each member of the team had to learn something new at a point during the hackathon for the sake of implementing it in our application. We're also proud of our team's ability to work collaboratively to develop an app that integrates different features seamlessly.
What we learned
We learned a lot about the importance of collaboration and communication when working on complex projects with multiple teams. We also learned a lot about the unique challenges faced by individuals and communities in Africa regarding access to quality primary healthcare. In addition to addressing a problem that is faced in the healthcare systems in Africa, we also got to learn about better ways to develop and deploy our application with the help of our coaches.
What's next for Vitalis
Moving forward, we plan to continue improving and expanding Vitalis's features to better serve the needs of our users. Some of the features that we plan to implement is integrating a health provider lookup feature where users can access healthcare providers in their location. In addition to that, we are also hoping to have the doctors upload the records for the patients giving control of records to the patients. This information is crucial as a patient can keep track of their health status.
