Inspiration

The inspiration behind VitaLink comes from the ongoing struggle faced by Thalassemia patients in India. Many patients require frequent blood transfusions, but finding reliable and recurring blood donors remains a major hurdle. There is also a noticeable lack of awareness about the condition and an absence of engagement tools that motivate donors to continue contributing. Recognizing this gap, we were inspired to create a platform that not only facilitates connections between donors and patients but also builds an ecosystem of education, motivation, and community-driven support.

What We Plan to Learn

Through this project, we hope to learn how technology—when applied in simple and human-centered ways—can make a real-world impact. We aim to explore how gamification strategies like leaderboards, donor streaks, and interactive quizzes can increase long-term donor engagement. We are also interested in understanding how geographic and historical donation data can be used to better match patients with available donors. Additionally, this project will help us build skills in designing interfaces for multiple user groups and managing user data responsibly.

How we Plan to build it

To build VitaLink, we plan to use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend, along with Python (Flask or FastAPI) for the backend. Firebase Firestore will be used to store donation logs, user profiles, and quiz scores. Firebase Authentication will manage user login and access control, while Firebase Hosting or PythonAnywhere/Render will be used for deployment. We will integrate Google Maps API to help users locate nearby donors and visualize regional trends.

Challenges We Expect

We anticipate facing several challenges. These may include motivating users to register and actively participate, especially in the early stages. Protecting user data, especially sensitive medical and location information, will be critical. Verifying donor authenticity and ensuring content accuracy for educational materials are also expected hurdles. Additionally, designing a platform that feels equally usable for both urban and rural users will require careful thought and user testing.
