Inspiration
Thalassemia patients in India face a recurring crisis — the constant need for blood, lack of consistent donors, financial strain, and poor public awareness. We were inspired to create VitaLink after learning about the critical gaps in the donation ecosystem. We wanted to build a solution that doesn't just collect blood — but connects donors, hospitals, and blood banks while showing donors exactly how they’ve made a difference.
"Where Every Drop Finds a Purpose" became our guiding mission.
What it does
VitaLink is a web platform that connects:
- Hospitals to request blood with patient details
- Blood Banks to manage stock and use AI forecasting to predict shortages
- Donors to: Book donation appointments Use an AI assistant to check eligibility Donate money to help Thalassemia patients Access the “Your Impact” page to see how their donations helped save lives Unlock achievements and gift cards to encourage recurring donations
How we will build it
We would like to use the MERN stack (MongoDB, Express.js, React, Node.js) for the core app, with the following integrations: AI Assistant: GPT-4 API to guide donors on eligibility AI Forecasting: ML model using historical demand for blood stock prediction (LSTM prototype) Firebase: For notifications and authentication Chart.js / D3.js: Visual dashboards for blood stock analytics Payment Gateway: Razorpay integration for donations Gamification: Custom logic for badges and rewards We are focusing on clean UI, role-based routing, and real-time sync between roles.
Challenges we ran into
Creating a realistic AI assistant that gives helpful (but not medical) advice for donation readiness Designing emotional yet privacy-respecting stories for the “Your Impact” page Balancing a simple UX for 3 different user roles Integrating AI forecasting with limited real-world data Scope creep — there were so many good ideas that we had to prioritize carefully!

Building a full-stack MVP with 3 complete roles in a short time Creating a functioning AI assistant prototype Designing the “Your Impact” experience — which emotionally connects donors with their real-life impact Blending tech and empathy into a seamless platform Coming up with the name VitaLink and the tagline "Where Every Drop Finds a Purpose"
What we learned
That tech + storytelling can drive real action How critical donor trust and transparency are to sustained participation The power of simple AI integration to assist and educate users How to design with empathy — especially when dealing with sensitive health issues That even a small team, with the right intent, can make a platform that saves lives

Improve AI forecasting with real donation datasets Add regional language support for rural areas Partner with real blood banks and NGOs to test deployment Add donor leaderboards, friend invites, and blood drives to boost participation Expand “Your Impact” with video stories and verified donor certifications Launch mobile app version on Android and iOS Create an open API so hospitals and banks can integrate directly
