Vita uses AI to help understaffed care workers take care of their patients.
-
At the beginning of each shift, the caretaker can assign themselves patients.
-
The caretaker can either view the biometric data of the user, or a map view that shows all their locations.
-
When a patient requires immediate assistance, the caretaker is directed to the patient.
Inspiration
During the pandemic, nursing homes recorded a high number of deaths. These 40,000 deaths were not a result of COVID-19, rather they were a result of understaffing in nursing homes.
Up to 90% of nursing homes are understaffed, and one nurse’s aide may have to take care of up to 15 patients at once when they’re only supposed to have 7 or 8. 46% of nurses also said they’ve missed changes in a patient’s condition because of their excessive workload.
Framing
How might we develop a digital solution that helps relieve some of the burden understaffed care workers go through, essentially helping them take care of their patients?
What it does
The React Native App acts as a way to monitor the residents of senior homes. The idea is that each resident keeps a device with them at all times, and it keeps track of information like medical information, current status, and location. It utilizes information tracked my sensors to monitor the health of patients while catching some of the early warning signs of some common complications among seniors, like heart attacks for example. Vita makes it easy for nursing staff to care for their residents, while aiming to balance out the patient-to-nurse ratio.
How we built it
Christina used Figma to design the UI and wrote frontend code using React Native. Devon trained a deep learning model and wrote a Python simulator with a lot of threading and async madness, which was super complicated. Jayden took charge of the MappedIn SDK and built out its features and integrated Google Firebase with the React Native code. Jun helped out Devon by sorting through data which he used to train the deep learning model.
Challenges we ran into
Christina burned in dependency hell all night. Legend says she's still in it. Jayden struggled with Firebase and React Native all night, but he finally managed to integrate it with the help of mentor Kraig.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Devon's done some incredibly hard work training a deep learning model and developing a Python simulation to support our demo. Jayden's also incredibly proud to have integrated Firebase with React Native.
What we learned
Jayden learned how to use the MappedIn SDK and how to use React Native for the first time. Jun was able to learn more about AI and machine learning by supporting Devon in sorting through data which they used to train the model, which is not bad for his first hackathon!
What's next for Vita
One thing that we learned is that one of the most common causes of injury in nursing homes is falling, so we'd like to implement something for Vita so that it notifies the caretaker if such an incident occurred to an elderly patient.
