About the Project
Every image tells a story, but when changes happen over time, spotting them quickly and accurately can be a real challenge. Our project, VisuView AI, was born from the idea of simplifying and scaling visual comparison technology for both everyday users and professional industries.
We realized that people often take dozens of similar photos and struggle to choose the best one. At the same time, industries like motorsport engineering need advanced tools to detect even the smallest visual changes, from new cracks on a race car body to missing sponsor logos after a pit stop. So, we set out to build a single platform that could serve both worlds seamlessly.
Our platform features two powerful portals:
- Upload & Compare: For general users to upload two images, instantly visualize differences, and receive AI-driven suggestions on which looks better.
- Time-Series Comparison: For motorsport teams to analyze multi-image timelines, detect new damage, and verify logo compliance, turning complex image data into actionable insights.
To make the analysis more intuitive, we integrated two powerful visualization layers:
- Spotting View: Uses color-coded highlights (red, yellow, green) to make changes instantly visible, even to non-technical users.
- Heatmap View: Helps professionals understand deeper changes and intensity patterns over time.
We will also build a Dashboard Page that transforms comparison data into meaningful insights, featuring a racing-track-inspired graph, a recent activity timeline, total comparisons, detected changes, AI-generated reports, and a complete project history log. This helps users monitor their work and progress visually, making our tool more than just a difference engine—it becomes a complete analytical ecosystem.
Inspiration
Our inspiration came from two very different yet equally real challenges. On one hand, everyday users often take dozens of similar photos of themselves, products, or moments and struggle to decide which one is best. On the other hand, industries like motorsports deal with life-at-speed decisions where even the tiniest visual change—a crack, a misaligned logo, or a paint scrape—can have big consequences. We wanted to build a solution that solves both problems on one platform: a tool that is simple and intuitive for regular users, yet powerful and insightful for professional environments.
What It Does
VisuView AI is an AI-powered visual difference engine designed to compare images intelligently and visually. It offers two specialized portals:
- Upload & Compare Portal (for everyone): Users can upload two similar images—like two photos of themselves or a product—and instantly see highlighted differences using color-coded spotting. Our integrated AI assistant even suggests which image looks better and why.
- Time-Series Portal (for industries): Tailored for motorsport and engineering teams, this module compares a sequence of images over time to detect new cracks, scrapes, paint transfers, or even missing sponsor logos. It quantifies changes using KPIs like severity, ΔE value, or area coverage.
- Dashboard: A racing-themed analytics dashboard gives users project-level insights with graphs, statistics, recent activity, and AI-generated reports, turning raw comparison data into meaningful business intelligence.
How We are going to Built It ?
- Frontend: HTML, Tailwind CSS, JavaScript - For building a fast, responsive, and modern user interface that works seamlessly across all devices.
- Dashboard Graphs: Chart.js - To visualize project statistics, progress tracking, and comparison trends in an interactive, racing-themed dashboard.
- Time Handling: Day.js - For managing timestamps, recent activities, and user history data across the dashboard and reports.
- Backend: Node.js + Express.js - Powers the server-side logic, handles API routes, manages data flow, and connects frontend with backend services. Heavy image processing is decoupled and offloaded to scalable Firebase Functions to ensure a non-blocking, responsive platform.
- Image Processing: OpenCV (Node.js binding) - The core engine for detecting visual differences, generating spotting overlays, and creating heatmaps for deep analysis, utilizing feature-based image registration (alignment) and perceptual difference detection (Structural Similarity/SSIM) to ensure fast, accurate results for the project.
- AI Insights: Gemini 2.5 Pro API - Provides intelligent insights, comparison explanations, contextual analysis, and powers the chat assistant.
- Authentication: Firebase Auth - Ensures secure and scalable user sign-in, sign-up, and session management.
- Database: Firebase Firestore + Real-time Listeners - Stores project data, chat history, and user activities with real-time updates for a dynamic user experience.
- PDF Generation: jsPDF - Exports comparison reports, change analysis, and AI insights into downloadable PDF files.
- Voice Support: Web Speech API - Enables voice input and text-to-speech for an interactive, accessible chat assistant experience.
- Optional Storage: Supabase - Used for storing complex or large-scale structured data when needed, complementing Firestore.
Challenges We Might Face
While implementing VisuView AI, we anticipate a few key challenges:
- Simplifying Complex Results: Making complex computer vision results easy for non-technical users to understand will require careful UX design.
- Scalability & Performance: Optimizing OpenCV processing in Node.js while keeping the platform fast and responsive might be difficult as we scale.
What We Aim to Achieve
With VisuView AI, our primary goal is to build a solution that makes complex visual comparison both powerful and accessible. We aim to achieve several meaningful milestones through this project:
- Bridging Two Worlds: Create a platform that serves everyday users by solving real-world confusion around image comparisons and caters to motorsport professionals with deep, industry-specific analysis.
- Human-Centric Insights: Deliver highly accurate difference detection, spotting, and heatmap visualization while ensuring results are simple, understandable, and actionable for all users.
- AI-Driven Decision Support: Use Gemini AI to transform raw comparison data into meaningful insights and recommendations that can guide decisions in design, engineering, and performance.
- Motorsport Innovation: Provide teams with automated tools to detect new damage, verify sponsor compliance, and track car changes over time, helping them make faster, data-driven decisions.
- Scalable Impact: Build a foundation that can easily expand beyond motorsport into domains like manufacturing, product inspection, healthcare imaging, and more.
What We Expect to Learn
Through building VisuView AI, we aim to gain valuable experience and insights in several key areas:
- Advanced Computer Vision: We expect to deepen our understanding of image alignment, difference detection, and heatmap visualization using OpenCV in real-world scenarios.
- AI-Powered Insights: Working with Gemini 2.5 Pro will help us learn how to generate meaningful contextual insights from visual data and integrate them seamlessly into a user-facing product.
- System Design & Scalability: We hope to strengthen our skills in designing scalable backend architectures that can handle complex image analysis workflows while remaining fast and reliable.
- User Experience & Communication: We plan to learn how to present complex visual data and technical reports in ways that are simple, intuitive, and useful for both everyday users and industry professionals.
- Real-world Applications: By aligning our project with motorsport use cases and user-facing scenarios, we aim to understand how deep-tech solutions can solve real-world industry problems.
Key Features & Uniqueness
- AI-powered Insights (Gemini 2.5 Pro): A conversational assistant explains image differences and provides recommendations.
- Spotting Visualization: Non-technical users get clear, highlighted difference points for simple understanding.
- Heatmap Analysis: Professionals get deep visual analytics: intensity maps, severity scores, and region-wise data.
- Scalable for Any Use Case: Works for both casual image comparison and industrial inspection pipelines.
What's Next for VisuView AI
This is just the beginning; our vision for VisuView AI goes far beyond. Here's what we plan to explore next:
- Smarter AI Insights: Integrate deeper machine learning models to not only detect changes but also classify and predict their potential causes and impacts.
