Inspiration
Agent workflows in Codex are powerful, but their topology, authority, and runtime state are usually invisible. Visual Dex makes the team visible and configurable before a run begins.
What it does
Visual Dex adds an inline Topology Workbench to Codex. Toggle the supervisor, stages, and individual agents; collapse stage groups without losing selections; inspect exact policy, provenance, and runtime footprint; tune the interface; and launch one typed supervised run. Partial selections preserve each agent’s native behavior.
How we built it
We built a Codex plugin and skill backed by a typed orchestration model, generated standalone inline visualization, runtime admission rules, dynamic worker synchronization, and responsive browser-tested UI. Codex with GPT-5.6 accelerated research, implementation, independent review, repair cycles, and exact-head integration checks.
Challenges
The hardest part was keeping admission, topology, inspector, and footprint matrix truthful for built-in and dynamic custom workers. We also made the standalone visualization safe through Codex’s document rendering pipeline.
Accomplishments
The final workbench supports Light, Dark, System, and Codex themes; independent stage and agent controls; a supervisor; collapsible groups; accessible responsive layouts; and dynamic custom workers. It installs and runs directly inside Codex.
What’s next
Richer live execution telemetry, reusable graph presets, and more integrations while preserving exact provenance and authority boundaries.
