AI-Driven Travel Planning & Discovery Engine

🌍 Inspiration: The Why Behind the Project

Rwanda’s tourism industry is booming, with over 1.4 million visitors generating more than $620 million in 2023. However, many tourists and even locals struggle to find accurate, up-to-date information about places to visit, cultural experiences, events, and accommodations. Most available platforms offer scattered or outdated information, making trip planning a frustrating and time-consuming process.

We were inspired by this challenge and saw an opportunity to create a high-value, high-impact solution that simplifies travel and local discovery using AI. Our goal was to make exploring Rwanda effortless and enjoyable, whether for tourists unfamiliar with the country or locals looking for new experiences.

🛠 How We Built It: The Technology & Process

We developed our AI-Driven Travel Planning & Discovery Engine as a smart, centralized platform that provides real-time travel insights. Our system integrates:

  • ✅ AI-Powered Recommendations – Uses machine learning to generate personalized travel plans.
  • ✅ Interactive Maps – Highlights places to visit with real-time location and pricing data.
  • ✅ Business Listings & Reviews – Helps users find trusted restaurants, hotels, and entertainment spots.
  • ✅ Cultural & Event Discovery – Keeps users updated on festivals, conferences, and hidden gems.
  • ✅ Seamless User Experience – Built for both mobile and web platforms, making access easy.

We utilized React.js for the front end, Django for the backend, and Google Maps API for interactive location services. Our AI engine was trained to analyse user preferences and provide smart itinerary suggestions, making trip planning highly efficient.

📚 Lessons Learned: Growth & Discovery

Throughout this journey, we learned:

  • The importance of user experience in travel tech—travellers need seamless, real-time access to reliable data.
  • AI is a game-changer in personalization—users appreciate custom recommendations that match their interests.
  • Rwanda’s tourism sector has huge potential, and technology can play a key role in improving how people explore the country.
  • Collaboration is key—bringing together developers, UI/UX designers, and tourism experts helped shape a strong product.

🚧 Challenges We Faced & Overcame

  • 🔹 Data Accuracy & Real-Time Updates – Aggregating reliable data from multiple sources was a challenge, but we implemented dynamic APIs to fetch updated information.
  • 🔹 AI Fine-Tuning – Training our AI model to offer precise, user-specific recommendations required continuous adjustments and testing.
  • 🔹 Scalability & Performance – Ensuring the platform could handle high traffic and provide smooth user interactions involved optimizing our backend architecture.
  • 🔹 Local Business Engagement – Convincing small businesses to register on the platform required outreach efforts and an incentive model.

🚀 What’s Next?

We’re excited to launch our MVP within 4 months, onboard local businesses, and refine our AI to make trip planning in Rwanda as seamless as possible. Our ultimate vision is to expand beyond Rwanda, bringing smart travel solutions to more regions and revolutionizing the way people explore new places.
