Inspiration

Cultural misunderstandings can create barriers, embarrassment, and missed opportunities in our increasingly connected world. We were inspired by countless stories of travelers, business professionals, and students who faced awkward situations due to unfamiliarity with local customs. We wanted to create a platform where people could learn cultural etiquette in a fun and engaging way before these situations arise, transforming potential embarrassment into confidence and respect.

What it does

Respectful Journey is an interactive cultural etiquette learning game that teaches users proper behavior and customs across 20+ countries through scenario-based challenges. Players progress through difficulty levels (Beginner to Master) while earning points, unlocking badges, and building cultural competency. The platform features:

• 200+ Cultural Scenarios across Japan, Korea, Thailand, Singapore, and more
• AI-Powered Scenario Creation where users can request custom scenarios for specific situations
• Progressive Learning System with four difficulty levels and unlockable content
• Community Features allowing users to create, review, and publish their own scenarios
• Gamification Elements including points, badges, and achievement tracking
• Real-World Applications covering business meetings, dining etiquette, religious sites, and social interactions

How we built it

We built Respectful Journey using modern web technologies:

• Frontend: React with TypeScript for type safety and component-based architecture
• Styling: Tailwind CSS for responsive, beautiful UI design
• State Management: Custom React hooks for game progress and local storage persistence
• Icons: Lucide React for consistent, scalable iconography
• Build Tool: Vite for fast development and optimized production builds
• Data Structure: Comprehensive JSON-based scenario system with 50+ scenarios per difficulty level
• AI Simulation: Mock AI scenario generation system for user-created content

The architecture emphasizes modularity with separate components for different game features, making it easy to extend and maintain.
