Inspiration
A hope to make public spaces more accessible to visually-impaired users in an innovative way. Hope to improve patient safety for visually impaired individuals in hospitals by reducing fall risk.
What it does
Uses ultrasonic technology to detect distance from surfaces and large objects and indicate to users an approximate distance.
How we built it
Implemented an Expo React Native app. Built a speaker and sensor ultrasound technology.
Challenges we ran into
Nuances with the path variable. Expo go limitations. Lack of bluetooth compatibility with React Native. Hardware sensitivity.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Researched how to make an accessible interface for blind users and implementing text to speech and double click features that are not native to React Native.
What we learned
How to use React Native. Bluetooth versus wifi connectivity pros and cons. Development builds, including understanding when to use Expo Go.
What's next for VisionMate
Improving wireless connectivity and I/O with the sensor device.
