Inspiration

The idea for visionary came from the struggles that we experience when try to record our notes and ideas in apps that are not meant for them: screenshots of products are ugly and mix in with your other photos; saved marketplace listings get sold and go away; keeping tabs open as a way to keep track notes or interests fills your browser up.

What it does

Visionary consolidates these into one place, recording the key details as information that stays on your vision board, allowing you to close those tabs you've been keeping open.

How we built it

Visionary was coded with Claude Code. We began by defining the primitives we would like to see, and the layout in which they would render. Before beginning development, we encapsulated those primitives in a simple data model. From there, that model could drive both the frontend, ensuring that it handles only rendering, as well as translating it into prompts that our express server can send to the Gemini API, and into entries in our Neon database.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge we ran into was finding a unique graphical identity. After developing down one path, we had to do a full pivot of the graphical system in order to increase the app's unique appeal. We used color and icon coding to make the vision board easily scannable.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built a detailed set of primitives to drive our apps various widgets. These presets help to reduce decision paralysis, as well as hinting at the widgets' semantics in order to ensure accuracy of Gemini data matching.

What we learned

We learned that building a consistent data model that is separate from frontend rendering allows for better use of AI tools to code as a team, resulting in less conflicts. While following norms and common trends allows for quick startup time in getting a design off the ground, we learned that taking the time to explore and define a unique and consistent design identity pays off in making the app more attractive and enjoyable to use. Lastly, we gained a better understanding of the importance of grit, to critically evaluate our work and not be afraid to make large changes and do the work to catch up.

What's next for Visionary

The next goals for visionary would be to allow for the customization and implementation of user-created widgets, allowing users to personalize their widgets even more. Another goal would be to allow for more dynamic types of media in widgets, such as images and video clips.
