Inspiration

The inspiration for VISIONA AI came from a simple question:

What if a camera could do more than just capture imagesβ€”what if it could help people understand the world around them?

We wanted to build an intelligent visual companion that could use a phone or computer camera to help users identify and understand objects, read text, communicate through voice, and eventually help bridge the communication gap between people who understand sign language and those who do not.

VISIONA AI combines several ideas we are passionate about: artificial intelligence, computer vision, accessibility, and human-centered technology. Our goal was to create something that feels less like a collection of separate tools and more like one intelligent assistant that can see, understand, and communicate.

What it does

VISIONA AI is an AI-powered visual assistant designed to interact with the world through a device's camera.

The platform brings together multiple capabilities, including:

πŸ“· Visual understanding β€” uses the camera and AI to analyze what the user is showing it. 🧱 Object and material recognition β€” designed to help identify objects and distinguish materials such as metal, plastic, wood, and cardboard. πŸ“– Text reading β€” helps users capture and understand text through their camera. πŸŽ™οΈ Voice interaction β€” allows users to interact with the assistant using speech. πŸ”Š Text-to-speech β€” enables VISIONA to communicate responses back to the user. 🀟 Sign language support β€” uses hand tracking as the foundation for recognizing sign language gestures and translating them into understandable communication. πŸ’¬ AI conversation β€” allows users to ask questions and interact with the AI assistant.

Our vision is simple:

See it. Understand it. Communicate.

How we built it

We built VISIONA AI as a modern web application using a combination of AI, web technologies, and computer vision tools.

The project uses technologies and concepts including:

React TypeScript TanStack Start Vite Camera APIs Google Gemini API MediaPipe hand tracking Speech recognition Text-to-speech GitHub Vercel

The application was initially developed with an AI-assisted development workflow, and then we continued working with the actual source code locally. We pushed the project to GitHub and deployed it to Vercel.

The architecture was designed to keep different systems modular, including camera functionality, AI interaction, speech, hand tracking, sign-language recognition, and the application's AI state.

For the visual AI functionality, the camera captures information that can be analyzed by AI. For sign-language interaction, we use hand tracking to capture hand landmarks and create a foundation for gesture recognition.

Challenges we ran into

Building VISIONA AI came with several challenges.

One of the first challenges was moving from an AI-generated project into a real development environment where we could control and modify the code ourselves. We had to understand the project's structure, dependencies, package manager, and framework.

Another major challenge was deployment. The project uses a modern application architecture, so deploying it was not as simple as uploading a traditional website with an index.html file. We had to understand how the framework works, test production builds, connect the project to GitHub, configure Vercel, and manage environment variables securely.

We also faced challenges with:

Setting up the development environment. Package manager compatibility. Configuring API keys without exposing them publicly. Deploying a full-stack application correctly. Getting Google Search Console verification working. Creating and troubleshooting SEO files such as sitemaps. Designing a system that combines several AI features without making the experience confusing.

The biggest technical challenge ahead is developing accurate real-time sign-language recognition, because hand tracking alone does not automatically translate sign language. A proper recognition system requires training data, gesture classification, and careful testing.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we turned an idea into a live, publicly accessible application.

Some of our biggest accomplishments include:

πŸš€ Building and deploying VISIONA AI online. πŸ“· Creating a foundation for camera-based AI interaction. 🧠 Integrating AI capabilities into the application. 🀟 Building the architecture for hand tracking and future sign-language recognition. πŸŽ™οΈ Adding voice interaction capabilities. πŸ“– Creating a foundation for camera-based text understanding. ☁️ Successfully moving the project from development to GitHub and Vercel. πŸ” Setting up secure environment variables for AI services. πŸ”Ž Connecting the project to Google Search Console. πŸ€– Combining multiple technologies into one unified AI companion.

Most importantly, we are proud that we did not stop when we encountered technical problems. Every deployment error, missing dependency, configuration issue, and verification problem became part of the learning process.

What we learned

VISIONA AI taught us that building an AI product is much more than simply connecting an API.

Throughout the project, we learned more about:

Modern React application architecture. TypeScript and component-based development. Using device cameras in web applications. AI API integration and security. Environment variables and protecting API keys. Computer vision concepts. Hand tracking and gesture recognition. Speech recognition and text-to-speech. GitHub version control. Production deployment with Vercel. Debugging framework and build problems. SEO, sitemaps, and Google Search Console.

One of our biggest lessons was that AI-assisted development can help you move faster, but understanding the code and architecture is still essential when something breaks.

What's next for VISIONA AI

VISIONA AI is just getting started.

Our next goals include:

🀟 Developing a more accurate real-time sign-language recognition model. 🌍 Exploring support for local and regional sign languages. πŸ“· Improving object and material recognition. 🧠 Making the visual AI faster and more accurate. 🌐 Adding more languages. 🎨 Creating a more immersive animated and futuristic user interface. πŸ“± Improving the mobile experience. πŸ‘₯ Testing VISIONA with real users and accessibility communities. πŸ“š Building a larger dataset and recognition system for gestures and sign language. πŸ”— Integrating additional AI and accessibility tools. πŸš€ Growing VISIONA from a project into a platform that can help people interact with technology and the world around them.

Our long-term goal is to make VISIONA AI a powerful and accessible visual companion:

An AI that doesn't just process informationβ€”but helps people see, understand, and communicate.
