Inspiration
When we watched Gabby Beckford's brief, one line stopped us: "the gap between inspiration and action."
Her audience; ambitious women who want to travel solo, negotiate six-figure salaries, and achieve financial freedom, aren't lacking motivation. They're drowning in inspiration. Saving Pinterest pins, making vision boards, consuming motivational content.
But then... they wait. Wait for permission. Wait for confidence. Wait for the "perfect moment."
We realized: vision boards are beautiful, but they're passive. What if we could make them active? What if every dream pinned automatically became a roadmap you could follow?
That's why we built our app Gabby; to bridge the gap between dreaming and doing.
Note: We named the app “Gabby” as a tribute to Gabby Beckford, who inspired the concept. For any public release, we would only use the name with her explicit permission.
What it does
Gabby transforms vision boards from passive inspiration into active achievement tools through a four-part system:
1. Create Your Vision Board: Create beautiful vision boards with customizable styles, inspirational images, quote cards, and stickers.
2. Strengthen Your Goal: Make your goal clear and achievable with Gabby’s guided roadmap steps.
3. Plan Your To-do: Break your goal into action and schedule one-time or recurring to-dos
4. Track Your Progress with Gabby’s Companion: Meet Gabby, your friendly bird guide. She celebrates your wins, helps you earn journey items (compass, flashlight, map), and keeps you motivated without judgment.
Result: Users don't just collect dreams; they achieve them, one step at a time.
How we built it
We developed this project using Xcode and SwiftUI, leveraging Apple’s modern declarative UI framework to build a clean and scalable architecture.
Challenges we ran into
Making vision boards feel actionable, not decorative: Vision boards are usually passive. We turn inspiration into action by automatically unlocking a structured roadmap when users add goals, so it feels like the vision board naturally shifts from dreaming to doing.
Explaining the full system in onboarding: We needed to quickly introduce vision boards, roadmaps, goal strengthening, and task planning during onboarding. We used a show, not tell approach with seven visual demo screens, so users understand the full journey at a glance.
Balancing structure and freedom: Too much guidance feels restrictive, too little creates overwhelm. We designed guided flexibility: structured first steps (SMART goals, finding your why), then full control with custom tasks.
Giving Gabby personality: Companions can easily become annoying. We made Gabby contextual, appearing at key moments with the right expressions and a consistent tone: a supportive friend, never a judgmental coach.
What we learned
This project helped us explore how motivation theories can be translated into a product experience. We experimented with turning inspiration into action by combining structure, small steps, and visible progress. Designing the flow from vision boards to goal roadmaps challenged us to think about how goals can be made more concrete and actionable without feeling overwhelming.
We also explored how to integrate gentle gamification and positive reinforcement into the core experience. Through collectible items, celebration moments, and a companion-guided flow, we experimented with designing emotional feedback loops that encourage habit-building without pressure or judgment.
Working with a creator brief pushed us to blend storytelling with product thinking and to design an end-to-end motivation-driven journey.
What’s next for vision board and goal tracker: Gabby
Phase 1: Post-Hackathon (0–2 weeks): Refine onboarding, expand content, improve performance, test premium flows, add basic analytics.
Phase 2: AI Personalization (2–6 weeks): AI goal refinement, smart task suggestions based on vision board content.
Phase 3: Community Features (6–12 weeks): Accountability partners, shared boards, public milestones, group challenges.
Phase 4: Real-World Integration (12+ weeks): Travel, career, finance, and learning integrations. Calendar sync.
Long-Term Vision: Make Gabby the go-to platform for ambitious women to achieve their goals.
