Inspiration In today’s world, it’s normal to not go outside for days. But there’s only so much you can do in your house. The result: teens spending over 9 hours a day on their devices. Studies have shown that the more time teenagers spend on their phones and social media, they have reported to be more depressed. In addition, not everyone wants to be spending that much time staring at a screen, but what else is there to do? For our project, we decided to try to solve this issue while also promoting social good.

What is does VISE is our web page that asks for your mood and your interests to then generate a series of activities that you can do and enjoy. What makes our web page stand out is that all the activities are directed to great social impact. If users are feeling down, we generate ideas to get their mood right back up all while making a positive impact on their community.

How we built it The VISE web page is a place for users to find social good activities to do. The user interface is built with HTML, CSS, and Javascript while the functional components of the quiz are powered by Java. We used to collaborate and review each other’s code.

Challenges we ran into One challenge we faced was related to design. The icons that we wanted to use for our web page were copyrighted so we had to create our own. In addition, we lost half our code due to network connectivity problems and we had to rewrite them!

Accomplishments that we’re proud of During this weekend, each member had their own personal accomplishments but for us as a team it was to be able to see a vision become a reality in a matter of hours! It's amazing how much we can accomplish in a hackathon, especially if we work together!

What we learned One of the most important things we learned from this hackathon was teamwork! We all collaborated together and everyone contributed a little everywhere to create VISE!

What’s next for VISE For the next steps, we hope to evolve VISE into an app where people can have it on the go and even keep track of all the activities they’ve done and are still doing. We also hope to put in more ideas so that when users click generate they get dozens of options to choose from.
