Inspiration
As a high school junior forced to stay home during the state-wide "lock down" in California, I wanted to do something with my passion for app development. I knew that both WHO and CDC suggested effective hand washing as the most effective way to combat Covid-19, but found that many people do not truly knew all the correct hand-washing steps and many did not do it for the minimum 20 seconds suggested by WHO and CDC. This is how I came up with the idea of developing an app to help people wash hands more effectively.
What it does
With clear pictures and both written and voice instructions, the app breaks down the 11 hand-washing steps recommended by WHO and allows user to simply follow it during a hand wash.
How I built it
I previously built a tooth brush app, and adopted some of the similar framework for this app. As I made progress, I just spent more and more time adding features and making it better, as I really enjoyed this project.
Challenges I ran into
Initial version was a bit too complex for children and elderly to follow, so I added an instruction mode to really slows the 11 steps down for people who use it for the first time and want to learn the proper hand-washing skills. I also added voice instructions for people who are visually impaired so more people can benefit from it.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Some early users (my family and friends) told me that they appreciated the app during this pandemic which gave them greater confidence that their hands were clean after following the 11 steps in the app. I was really happy that I could help people with my own little ways, especially coding and app development are what I am passionate about.
What I learned
Develop something that people need, and listen to users and make improvements.
What's next for Scrubbin’
I am adding more features and functionalities, and expanding it to more platforms; in the mean time, and app is fully functional and I have submitted it to Apple Store and am waiting for the final approval.
