Problem In Cameroon from last statistics in 2018, over 4,201,988 pupils get into primary schools and 2,206,878 pupils finally get in to secondary school leaving 1,995,110 pupils school drop out with little or no foundational studies to fully interact or associate in the society. Secondary education is compulsory through the age of 12years but tuition and fees for secondary school remain unaffordable for many families hence contributing to the high level of youth illiteracy. Absenteeism of teachers is a reason generally considered to contribute to the poor level of education in the country. Teachers from both English and French sub-system, for cultural and historical reasons, still operates as separate in the educational system and this prevent teachers from developing a joint pedagogical repertoire about professional matters and to engage in productive debates around new discourses and repertoires such as ICTs and Technologies in support of teaching. Even if as private individuals, they appear to be open to the challenges of modern Cameroon and multilingual communication in large urban centers. In 2010, the UN committee on the Rights of the children stated that “is deeply concerned at the persistence of de facto discrimination among children in the enjoyment of their rights. It is especially concerned that girls, indigenous children, children with disabilities, refugee children, children from poor rural areas and children in street situation suffer particular disadvantages about education access in Cameroon”. Attending secondary is one of the best ways to advance economically; without the information and guidance necessary to apply to a secondary, many low-income students (street children, children with disabilities, orphans and school dropouts) are deprived of the opportunity to escape poverty
What it does
Concept Virtue Academy bridges this information and knowledge gap so that low-income students (street children, orphans, children with disabilities and school dropouts) who qualify to get into secondary school have the same opportunities as their high-income peers. Virtue Academy is a web-based platform where low-income students (street children, school dropouts, orphans and children with disabilities) (“Applicants”) are match with professionally trained teachers from ENS and ENSET (“Mentors”) who serve as college teachers/counsellors throughout the course of the student secondary education. Using an in-depth curriculum, Mentors will work one-on-one with Applicants studies for a very low and affordable cost that currently only privilege students can afford. The entire study program takes place online allowing us to overcome geographic and logistical barriers that have impeded the effectiveness of education in Cameroon.
