Inspiration

When developing Virtual Wonders, we thought back to the activities and lifestyle we missed most during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. This included travelling around the world, visiting different landmarks and learning about different cultures. The inability to travel inspired us to create the Virtual Wonders web application. Virtual Wonders hosts an interactive Google street view, allowing users to select and explore any of the 7 World Wonders from the comfort of their home.

What it does

Not only does Virtual Wonders enable users to visit any of the 7 world wonders, but they are able to read on, explore and learn about the culture and food local to each country. By clicking the markers at each location, users are able to read more about the country and attraction;

How I built it

Virtual Wonders was created utilizing HTML, CSS, JavaScript to create the front end of the app itself, then implemented the Google Cloud Platform’s Google Maps API into the web application using JavaScript. The logo was designed and created with Adobe Illustrator.

Challenges I ran into

We were faced with time constraints as well as a lack of experience in certain fields that forced us to find different methods of accomplishing tasks. We managed to find creative solutions to a variety of problems we faced with the design of the web application and the implementation of the API

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We managed to implement an API into the app with very little backend experience. It forced us to learn new concepts quickly, and seek help from a variety of sources; from mentors to online tutorials. It also allowed our team to practice our web development skills and design.

What I learned

It also allowed our team to practice our web development skills and design and developed our skills in back end developing

What's next for Virtual Wonders (Nirmal, Kavya, Devanshi, Skyler)

We will be making more improvements to how many locations there are, while also implementing an interactive game to incentivize traveling the world.
