Inspiration
Meta's unlocked a whole new world of fun with Virtual Toys. Quest 3 with its mixed reality capabilities, opened a way to create real tangible toys in real space and with nothing but pixels
What it does
It is simply a spaceship toy. You can fly it around. Shoot lasers. Destroy Asteroids. Play with it in your room, or outside. Fly it to the sun and back. Imagine. Since it is a toy you can also grab the spaceship and even the asteroids.
How we built it
Fairly easy. I took an X-wing model and built a simple controller. I then added some laser cannons and thrusters. Later I created an asteroid belt so there would be something to blow up. I wanted to feel like a toy so I adjusted it to an XBOX controller - it simply was more fun to hold and play. (Best played with XBOX controller);
Challenges we ran into
I wanted the controllers to be easy and familiar so I set the game up to work with XBOX controllers.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
There is no "post-processing" in mixed reality so I had to use a volumetric material to create lasers. It works well enough.
What we learned
I used the Room Model Block and tried to adjust the game to my room. It was fun at first (hitting walls and furniture), but then I went to play outside and it was way better! (so removed the RoomMode)
What's next for Virtual Toy - XWING
I made this toy for my kid. He requested power-ups and missiles ...and of course some Emire ships. I also want to create different play modes (inside, and outside and also multiplayer).
