Inspiration
The pandemic has changed what hanging out with friends looks like and we wanted to help making virtual hangouts more fun. An example of a virtual hangout could be PowerPoint Karaoke. PowerPoint Karaoke is when you are given a presentation to present only the catch is that you don't know what your presenting until you get the presentation. It's a great way to work on presentation skills in a casual environment since your usually surrounded by friends and could lead to some bonding moments within a group.
What it does
You can search through PowerPoints that other people have uploaded, or upload your own. Once you have selected a PowerPoint you could have the option to stream it to your friends so they can all see what you're looking at and enjoying spending time together viewing different presentations.
How we built it
We built it using mostly HTML/CSS and a little python and JavaScript.
Challenges we ran into
We initially wanted to embed Zoom but that ended up being significantly more difficult than what we expected so we decided to embed twitch instead. We also had some trouble with making the embedded PowerPoints visible no matter who was using the site.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We took a vague and not well known concept and somewhat turned it in an application that can be utilized with groups of people. There were so many unexpected aspects that we needed to think of that we didn't realize at first. We are also proud of how much we were able to get done even if it is not completely finished.
What we learned
We learned just how much planning needs to happen before you can even start working on a project.
What's next for Virtual PowerPoint Karaoke
We would like to connect to a database to store user information, as well as possible figure out how to embed Zoom or Twitch.
