Inspiration

Drawing from my experience in workflow development and UI replication, I was inspired by the need to make self-care more engaging and sustainable. The Bolt one-shot prompt challenge was perfect for creating a gamified wellness app that transforms boring habit tracking into caring for a beloved virtual pet - making healthy behaviors feel rewarding rather than tedious.

What it does

Finch is a virtual pet self-care companion that grows and evolves based on your real-life wellness activities. Users complete self-care tasks across physical, mental, social, and creative categories to earn XP and keep their finch happy. The pet's happiness, energy, and evolution stages directly reflect your self-care consistency, creating positive reinforcement for healthy habits.

How we built it

Built entirely with Bolt.new in a single prompt session, leveraging my UI development experience from replicating complex interfaces. The app uses React Native/PWA architecture with smooth animations, habit tracking systems, pet evolution mechanics, and notification scheduling. Modern design principles ensure the interface feels calming and encouraging rather than overwhelming.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing gamification without making self-care feel like a chore required careful UX design. Pet stat calculations needed to reflect real wellness principles while remaining engaging. Notification timing had to encourage without being pushy, drawing on workflow development patterns to create gentle, effective reminders.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Created a comprehensive wellness ecosystem in a single Bolt session with pet evolution, habit tracking, and social features. Successfully implemented complex state management for pet care mechanics. Achieved a calming, motivational UI that makes self-care feel like play rather than work.

What we learned

Gamification psychology requires understanding intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation. Mobile-first wellness apps need gentle encouragement rather than aggressive notifications. Virtual pet mechanics can be powerful tools for behavior change when properly balanced with real-world benefits.
