Augmented reality is a powerful tool allowing the placement of any computer rendered object within the real world. Through utilising the power of the Epson Moverio I plan to create an app that would allow user to navigate around a seemingly empty museum environment overlaid by the magnificence of an augmented reality (AR) environment.
There is only one Mona Lisa painting, but rather than having to travel to Paris to see it, you could instead go to your local Virtual Museum and view it in all its magnificence in the AR environment.
This app would open up endless possibilities in education as well where students could utilise the power of the Epson Moverio to view interactive exhibits in the comfort of their classroom.
In an example where the app were to be used in a museum, the museum would simply need to transfer the required interactive scene to the device and they would be provided with a unique AR image to place in the environment. Upon detecting the image the app would load the scene and display it over the real world environment, creating the illusion of a real world exhibit.
The cost of such exhibits would be drastically reduced against the real thing and would require very little maintenance. Additionally the app would allow for the user to receive contextual information relating to the exhibit such as a video of recorded audio guide. The exhibits can also be interactive, providing the opportunity to enhance the learning experience; especially for children visiting the museum.
The attached images show a virtual example of how the app would work, demonstrating how the user would view the environment with and without the app enabled.
