The Problem

During this time of virtual learning, teachers and students are using Google Meet/Zoom to communicate. The problem however is that students are having a difficult time paying attention and losing focus during their virtual classes. In some cases, students take advantage of their teachers by going on their phones without the teacher noticing. Students tend to lack motivation and engagement in learning in the comfort of their own homes.

What it does

Our Solution was to create our own version of the Virtual Interest Tracker. Virtual Interest Tracker, or VIT, is a website that track the user’s to what their line of sight is focusing on on the screen. If the user is focusing, it displays text indicating that they are focusing on the middle of the screen. But, if the user is not focusing it will beep very loudly which will most likely make them focus or at least alert those around them to pay attention. This will also work if you don’t have your webcam on in the actual video conference call because this is a website which is not directly connected to the call.

How we built it

Our project is a website that tracks whether the user is paying attention or not by Google’s Teachable Machine (Image Project) and JavaScript. The way it works is that an artificial intelligence scans through a series of images from separate classes and displays text on the screen with a certain sound effect based on the class/behavior of a person on the screen.

Challenges we ran into

The most challenging aspect of this hackathon was finding a innovative idea which we can actually solve in the 24 hour timeframe virtually. We had many different ideas such as an AR game which will teach the user the benefits of social distancing, a fitness trainer which uses AI to see if the user are doing the exercise correctly, and a social distancing detector. Some of them required certain resources to actually achieve but not being able to acquire them in person was our limitation.

What we learned

How to make a Chrome Extension and how to implement Teachable Machine into it. We ran out of time to make into an actual Chrome Extension We also learned how to implement Teachable Machine to our Chrome Extension.

What's next for Virtual Interest Tracker

Make into a Chrome and Zoom extension with Teacher and Student View which can be implemented into video conference applications such as Google Meets Make into a Android and IOS app for phone users for greater accessibility Possibly create our own video conferencing software which implements our Virtual Interest Tracker in it
