Inspiration
The AYUSH sector's deep reliance on medicinal plants inspired the idea for the Virtual Herbal Garden. Traditional healing practices are rooted in herbal knowledge, but access to these plants is often limited due to physical location or lack of awareness. We wanted to create a platform that brings this knowledge to a wider audience, making it more accessible through technology. By developing an immersive digital garden, we aim to bridge the gap between ancient wisdom and modern innovation, making learning about medicinal plants interactive, fun, and informative for everyone.
What it does
The Virtual Herbal Garden is an interactive, user-friendly platform that allows users to explore medicinal plants in a virtual environment. It includes:
3D Models: Users can interact with realistic 3D models of plants, zoom in, and view them from different angles. Detailed Information: Each plant has comprehensive details such as botanical name, common uses, medicinal benefits, and cultivation methods. Multimedia Integration: The platform is enriched with high-quality images, videos, and audio descriptions to create an engaging learning experience. Search & Filter Options: Users can search for plants based on medicinal properties, types, or regions, and filter them for more precise results. Virtual Tours: It provides guided tours, like "Plants for Immunity," which takes users through a curated selection of plants with specific health benefits. User Interaction: Features allow users to bookmark their favorite plants, take notes, and share information on social media.
How we built it
Frontend: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create a visually appealing and responsive interface. 3D Models: We used WebGL and libraries like Three.js to create realistic, interactive 3D plant models. Backend: A database (likely using Node.js or Python with Flask/Django) to store plant data, images, and user interactions. APIs and Integration: We integrated multimedia content (images, videos, audio) and built a custom search and filtering functionality. UI/UX Design: We focused on making the platform intuitive, using features like rounded search bars, an attractive font (Comic Sans), and engaging styles to improve user experienc
Challenges we ran into
3D Modeling: Creating realistic and interactive 3D models of plants was technically challenging, especially ensuring smooth rotation, zoom, and detailed textures. Data Integration: Curating accurate and detailed information about each plant and integrating multimedia resources required a lot of coordination and research. User Experience: Making the interface engaging yet informative without overwhelming the user was a balancing act. Search & Filter Optimization: Implementing advanced filtering options and making sure the search feature worked effectively with various user queries posed a technical challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully developed an interactive, immersive experience that makes learning about medicinal plants enjoyable. Implemented realistic 3D models that users can interact with, enhancing engagement and educational value. Created a comprehensive platform with multimedia content, search, and filtering options that provides a seamless user experience. Designed an intuitive and appealing UI/UX that caters to a broad audience, from students to practitioners.
What we learned
3D Modeling Skills: Gained experience with tools like WebGL and Three.js, learning how to create and integrate interactive 3D elements into a web application. AYUSH Knowledge: We delved deeper into the medicinal uses and benefits of plants used in traditional healing practices. UI/UX Design: We learned the importance of balancing aesthetics with functionality, especially for educational platforms. Collaboration: Developing a project of this scale required collaboration across different teams (e.g., developers, designers, and content researchers), improving our project management and teamwork skills.
What's next for Virtual Herbal Garden
Mobile App Development: We plan to develop a mobile app version to make the Virtual Herbal Garden accessible on the go. Augmented Reality (AR): Implement AR features so users can visualize medicinal plants in their real-world environments through their devices. Community Features: We want to add social features where users can discuss plants, share tips, and interact with others interested in traditional healing. Plant Care Integration: Introducing features that provide users with real-time suggestions for growing medicinal plants in their own homes or gardens. Continuous Updates: We plan to continuously add new plants, videos, and tours, and improve the platform based on user feedback.
