Inspiration

The ever-evolving world of virtual reality (VR) and its potential for immersive experiences sparked the creation of Virtual Drum Kit. We envisioned a project that would bring the excitement of drumming to a wider audience, removing the need for a physical drum set.

What it does

Virtual Drum Kit throws you into a Mixed Reality (MR) drumming experience. Using VR controllers, you hit virtual drum pads that correspond to colored symbols moving towards you, mimicking the classic Guitar Hero gameplay. This allows you to play along with your favorite music or explore different drum kits and genres.

How we built it

Building Virtual Drum Kit involved delving into various XR functionalities. We leveraged features like passthrough technology to blend the virtual and real worlds. Haptic feedback in the controllers simulates the feel of hitting drums, while controller input mapping translated physical movements into virtual actions. A core challenge was parsing music data and translating it into timed, colored drum symbols that move towards the player. We also needed to ensure accurate hit detection based on interaction with virtual drum pads, not the symbols themselves.

Challenges we ran into

Ensuring precise timing and accurate hit detection for the virtual drums proved to be a significant hurdle. Since players interact with pads instead of directly hitting the note objects, the system needed to be sensitive to controller movements within the designated hit zones.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of crafting an immersive drumming experience that removes the limitations of a physical drum set. Virtual Drum Kit makes drumming accessible to a wider audience and opens doors for creative expression in VR.

What we learned

This project pushed us to explore the potential of XR for both entertainment and accessibility. We learned valuable lessons about working with VR functionalities like passthrough technology, haptic feedback, and controller input mapping. Most importantly, we discovered the power of VR to create engaging and interactive experiences.

What's next for Virtual Drum Kit

The future of Virtual Drum Kit is bright! We envision incorporating features like multiplayer functionality, allowing players to jam together virtually. We're also exploring the possibility of integrating instructional elements to make Virtual Drum Kit a valuable learning tool for aspiring drummers. Ultimately, we aim to continuously refine the experience and push the boundaries of VR drumming.
