Inspiration
Before making this project our group knew we wanted to do something based in virtual reality. When we learned about the education track of the contest we immediately thought about the ever present threat of online schooling.
What it does
The goal of our project was to attempt to make a functional and interactable virtual reality environment where a class could potentially be held. The main function of our project is the working whiteboard, where you are able to draw or write whatever you wish.
How we built it
This project was built in Unity 3D. We imported the Steam VR Plugin which gave us access to all the tools we needed to create our scripts for grabbing, moving, and drawing.
Challenges we ran into
Our largest challenge was simply learning how to use unity with a virtual reality headset, none of our group came into this competition with much or any experience. We easily spent half our time making sure your can easily traverse the environment around you.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our largest accomplishment is the fully functioning whiteboard. We spend an insanely long amount of time figuring out how it works and what we needed to do to allow easy writing in our virtual reality space.
What we learned
We learned a lot. From how to import and utilize assets in Unity, create scripts to allow our teleportation in the classroom, and even write on the whiteboard. Everything that was done over this 36 hour span was new to all of us and a learning experience.
What's next for Virtual Classroom
The future of Virtual Classroom consists of just adding more features. One of which is providing each desk with something they could use to either type or write out notes. Another feature we wanted to add was the ability to import a video and play it on a screen, but we simply ran out of time to do it.
