AI runs on fossil fuels.

AI’s energy demand will double by 2030, fueled by coal and natural gas — what we call fossil fuels.

The receipts are clear:

  • Google’s carbon emissions have jumped +50%
  • Meta +34%
  • Microsoft +24%
  • Google even abandoned its Net Zero Carbon by 2030 goal

That didn’t sit right with us.

What if using AI could actually help the planet?

We made AI eco-friendly.

Viro AI tracks the energy use of every AI query and funds clean power to match it.

  • Choose an AI model
    • ChatGPT
    • Gemini
    • Claude
    • LLaMA
  • Ask anything
    • Text
    • Images analysis
    • Image generation
  • See the real-time energy impact of your query
  • Viro AI supports the equivalent clean energy by funding wind, solar, and hydro power projects

The result: AI that helps the planet, not harms it.

Every chat query funds clean energy.

We built a system that turns raw AI usage into real-world climate action:

  • Cursor
  • Supabase
  • AI APIs
  • RevenueCat :)
  • AI Energy Research Papers
  • Terrapass for verified clean energy funding

Challenges we ran into

  • Quantifying AI’s Energy Use: AI companies keep their energy data secret. We had to dig into academic research, model estimates, and creative ways to translate watt-hours into something users could understand.

  • Building Across Multiple Models: We didn’t want to lock users into just one AI. Supporting ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and LLaMA meant stitching together different APIs, each with quirks and limits.

  • Balancing Simplicity with Transparency: We wanted the app to feel as smooth as ChatGPT, but still show the “behind the scenes” energy impact. Designing that without overwhelming users took several iterations.

  • Funding Clean Power in Real Time: It wasn’t enough to just estimate the impact. We needed a trusted partner (Terrapass). Connecting climate funding to user activity was tricky but worth it.

Results: 950+ users and 5,000+ kWh of clean energy

A few things we’re proud of:

  • Proving that AI can benefit the planet
  • Building and shipping the app as a solo, one-person team
  • 750+ users turning AI usage into climate action
  • Funding over 3,000 kWh of clean energy — equal to 2,400 pounds of carbon removed
  • Supporting renewable energy projects across the globe (wind, hydro, and solar)

AI doesn’t have to wreck the planet.

We learned that people care deeply about the impact of their technology, but they also want it to feel effortless. If sustainability is built in, users will embrace it.

We also learned the value of shipping fast, even as a solo founder. The feedback from 750+ early users has been more powerful than any research alone, and it’s already shaping our next steps.

App Store reviews:

“If I’m using AI anyway, might as well help the planet…”

“This app feels clean and easy to use, and I love the idea of an AI that doesn’t ignore the environmental impact.”

“Love the idea behind this. Works just like ChatGPT, but it’s actually sustainable. Super smooth app.”

I've just checked out Viro and you've got an instant convert. What an incredible idea. I've been waiting for something like this after feeling increasingly guilty for using ChatGPT. Thank you!!

What's next? Climate action at scale.

Next, we’re scaling Viro AI to fund millions of kWh by expanding partnerships, growing our user base, and adding gamified features that keep people engaged.

On the roadmap:

  • Android and iPad releases
  • Expanded image generation and analysis
  • New partnerships to drive verified clean energy projects
  • Deeper impact reporting so users see the difference they make

With Viro AI, the more people chat, the more the planet wins.

☑ Now at 850+ Users
☑ App submitted to Google Play Store

User growth is coming from a blog I wrote that was picked up by Google/ChatGPT - have spent $0 on marketing / ads / social.
