Inspiration
One of our teammate's mother personally experienced life under a restricted diet due to unknown allergies; tools like this could help alleviate the stressful everyday life for others with dietary allergies caused only by their genetics.
What it does
Viridian scans through a multiple sets of DNA to find genetic variations and then determine the dietary changes necessary to account for how different people process food differently.
How we built it
We split the work across our three programmers; one to deal with backend, one to deal with frontend, and one to deal with security. Then we used Git to merge everything together into a single cohesive project and spun up a Flask website.
Challenges we ran into
Frontend: developed a personal vendetta against
and overcame the challenges of manually positioning HTML elementsSecurity: overcame the challenge of building SQL tables as opposed to her previous knowledge of trying to hack into SQL tables; learning to make rather than break
Backend: overcame the challenge of learning to build custom modules to align several DNA segments with a command line tool because preexisting Python modules did not work.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Security: Encrypting and removing PII
Frontend: the entire website, all built by hand
Backend: Custom DNA Alignment
Project Lead: Creating a video that properly presents the project under the time limit
What we learned
Security: to built code in a more OOP-friendly style
Frontend: Start merging separate elements of the project sooner
Project Lead: the whiteboard can be removed from the wall
Backend: DNA alignment is super tough and super cool
What's next for Viridian
