Our inspiration was the social media trends that have been occurring recently on platforms such as Tik Tok, Instagram, and Snapchat. Viridi aims to facilitate marketing strategies within these apps that could be utilized to encourage people to act upon issues that are trendy at the moment.
What it does
Users can upload before and after pictures of places they’ve cleaned up, with a location and caption tagged. Other users can upvote, comment, etc. This can be converted to social media currency known as seeds.
With the currency earned through posting and receiving upvotes, users can spend the currency within the in-app store to “buy trees”. Money acquired from the platform would go towards donating to tree-planting organizations.
How we built it
We built it using HTML, Tailwind CSS, and JS, using React for front-end development and Firebase for the back-end.
Challenges we ran into
Originally, we were going to use Django as a tool for the back-end, but upon discovering that it would not be feasible in the given time limit with our experience, we made the notion to switch to Firebase instead.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of working under pressure to create an app that can directly benefit others, as well as the environment.
We also take pride in the participation of our very first hackathon! By partaking in this event, we've learned a tremendous amount about the formatting of these events and what is important to focus on within the time slot given.
What we learned
As a team, we've learned to collaborate together, work under the pressure of a deadline, and the fun in participating in a hackathon!
In our subgroups, the Hack Team has learned about HTML5, React, and Firebase, and learned how to collaborate using Git/Github.
The Policy Team has learned about proper policy writing, the different types of policy briefs, and what is involved in writing each of them. We have also learned how to effectively conduct research on various topics, and apply it to our own papers to provide a well-rounded argument.
What's next for Viridi
Create a feature where users can ping a location that needs to be cleaned, shown on an interactive map. Users looking for cleanup work to do (to earn seeds) can then find pinged spots on the map. When the pinged location is cleaned by another user, the user that originally pinged the spot also gets a small reward.
With the currency earned through posting and receiving upvotes, users can spend the currency within the in-app store to “buy trees”. Money acquired from the platform would go towards donating to tree-planting organizations.
