VIRID: A Tap Away From A Greener Day
"With 3 members of our team having an expansive coding background and 1 well versed in the world of entrepreneurship, we saw it fitting to combine our talents to create a startup and what better startup than one that helps the planet? The lack of sustainability efforts has been a consistently pressing issue and there have not been many initiatives on an individual level to fix this. Here we saw an opportunity to use entrepreneurship for the well being of underprivileged people and our planet through means of a non-profit"
"There are two components to our project: the system and the pitch. The system involves the actual code for VIRID and creates the interface used by our clients and users. The app uses an authenticator to allow individuals to redeem points for basic necessities in exchange for cleaning up polluted areas. The pitch encompasses the business model and marketing plan that our team will put into action once the app goes live and we have potential investors"
"We created the backend of our project with the help of Node and Firebase. To facilitate user interaction, we built a front-end component (web app) from scratch with the help of React. To allow user authentication, we used Auth0 and for data storage, we worked with Firebase Realtime Database"
"It was the first time for us to work with React and Firebase. None of us are proficient in Javascript but for facilitation, it ended up being our main language during the project which made us run into a lot of bugs and researching. Along with that, we faced a bug while integrating Auth0 into our web app which ended up taking a good chunk of our time. Finally, the process from ideation to creation involved many compromises, some revamps of the code design, sacrifice of sleep, and a lot of hard work"
"Since, it was our first time working with these technologies, we're really proud of what we have built. Through this project, we all are more comfortable and motivated than ever to learn and dive deep into learning and mastering new technologies. We also faced some obstacles through the way but we worked as a team to solve them and move past it, which we all are really happy with. Lastly, we are proud of the fact we were able to come together and make a project that will better society and help those in need"
"An important thing we learnt is if we put our mind to something, then we can do anything. 24 hours back, none of us had worked with the technologies we ended up using in our project. It was our first hackathon and ended up facing a lot of changes. However, through this journey, we were able to learn a lot of new things and able to become better programmers. The process also ended up fueling our motivation to continue developing and building cool projects!"
"With more time the possibilities for VIRID are exponential. This is an initiative that is beneficial to all parties involved including users, corporate partners, the planet, as well as us as the creators. We will optimize the app in the near future to account for any lagging time, point accumulation accuracy, and the ability for users to upload their picture as mentioned in the business plan. We also want to have VIRID present in all major cities across the world where pollution is evident"
