Inspiration
I'm starting my own small vineyard, but don't actually know how to grow grapes. I wanted something that could offer help based on varietal and my location and help me track weather and vine conditions throughout the year.
What it does
From a ZIP code it loads local weather and a varietal guide for that hardiness zone, including planting, maintenance, harvest, and a spray timing outline. You can log soil pH, sugar, and written observations of the vines.
How we built it
I started through the hackathon’s interview, then let it build out an app with Tauri and Rust for the desktop shell, React and TypeScript for the interface. Initially I had it build with Godot because I was already working on another project with Godot and watned to keep using it to learn, but that didn't work so I had it rebuilt with the Taury/Rust and React/Typescript.
Challenges we ran into
The interview process itself. As an AI developer and platform engineer who uses a team of coding agents, this was not at all close to what my team and I do for developing new features. We often come to the agent with a plan already made and one-shot the prompt. We'll then iterate over the feature and make final tweaks and adjustments ourselves before setting up the infrastructure for deployment.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
It works! Most apps I build are webapps, so building a package to be a local executable was pretty cool
What we learned
Differences in build and requirements for building local executables vs webapps.
