Technology has evolved quickly and drastically over the past decades, but this fast-paced development can be difficult to keep up with, leaving many, particularly the elderly members of our society. Now, more than ever, with the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is increasingly important that the elderly are able to easily access and use technology, particularly to meet their healthcare needs.
There are dozens of healthcare apps and websites, but few are easily accessible for the elderly. With confusing icons, low visual contrast, hidden buttons, and no guidance, the elderly are usually not able to accomplish certain tasks as they expect. Therefore, our problem statement becomes the following:
"How might we help seniors receive care from their practitioners faster by improving their appointment-making experience?"
What is Vigor?
Vigor is a mobile app specially designed with improved accessibility that enables senior adults to manage appointments and receive care from their practitioners in a more timely manner.
User pain points & How we address them
Pain point #1: With diminishing cognitive skills, it can get overwhelming for the elderly to go through the lengthy sign-up process. And chances are that they come up with some random passwords during registration and forget about them within hours.
Feature #1: We aim at simplifying the sign-up process, enabling users to log into the app with their emails or phone numbers in one click instead of having to remember passwords.
Pain point #2: The elderly can get confused about the interactions without clear guidance. Filling out the same information over and over again before each appointment is also not in their favor.
Feature #2: We create step-by-step instructions to guide the elderly to fill out their basic information, insurance, and payment when they first log into the app. The information will be stored in the app, eliminating the repetitive steps when making appointments in the future.
Pain point #3: The traditional way of scheduling an appointment is inefficient as it not only takes time but the effort, especially during the COVID-19 pandemics. It is also unnecessary sometimes to be physically present at the hospital when they only attempt to seek basic medical inquiry.
Feature #3: Vigor allows the elderly to schedule, reschedule, and cancel appointments online, as well as virtually meeting with doctors based on their preference through the chat feature.
How we built it
We built the mobile app using React Native and tried to host our databases on Firebase. We had our design on Figma
What's next for Vigor
- Create a Companion App that allows the family members to manage and track information for the elderly
- Allow the elderly to ask a question online and have registered doctors/nurses who are available on the Internet respond within minutes
