Inspiration
Night shift nurses work during the most physically and mentally demanding hours, where fatigue can quietly affect focus, decision-making, and patient care. Studies have shown that nurses working night shifts exhibit higher rates of errors. Researchers identified that error rates for night shift workers can raise up to 44% than those of fixed day nurses. Most systems in healthcare track task and outcomes, but very few support the mental state of the workers in real time.
Vigil was inspired by the idea that the biggest risk isn't a lack of skill, but rather a loss of alertness during long, repetitive, and low-stimulating hours.
What it does
Vigil is a lightweight web app designed to support night shift nurses by helping them stay mentally engaged and aware during their shifts.
it:
- Tracks simple interaction inputs
- Calculates a real time awareness score
- Provides subtle, adaptive suggestions to maintain focus
How we built it
Vigil was built using:
- HTML & CSS for a simple, mobile friendly interface
- Vanilla JavaScript for all core logic
Challenges we ran into
- Designing a system that feels supportive, not intrusive.
- Keeping the interface minimal enough to use during real work conditions
- Balancing randomness with structure so the app feels dynamic not chaotic
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Creating a system that focuses on the human side of work, not just tasks
- Designing something that feels practical, and not just theoretical
What we learned
- Designing for real people requires understanding their daily experiences, not just their role
- Small interactions can have a big impact on behaviour and awareness
- The importance of balancing functionality with usability, especially in high pressure environments
What's next for Vigil
- Adding smarter pattern detections based on past sessions
- Improving the UI for faster, one-handed interaction
- Potential integration with team-based systems for shared awareness
