VIGIL
Driving needs constant attention, but human focus fades over time. Research shows eye behavior changes before fatigue or microsleep occurs, yet most systems react only after risk appears. This made us ask: what if drivers could see their attention decline before it becomes dangerous?
What Vigil Does
VIGIL is an Active Cognitive Modulator for vehicle dashboards. It monitors eye movement and physiological signals to estimate driver alertness through a Cognitive Bandwidth Index (CBI). When attention drops, the system provides subtle cues and recommends rest if needed.
How We Built It
We studied driver fatigue research and eye tracking metrics, then translated those insights into the CBI model. Using Figma, we built a full dashboard prototype with interactive screens.
Design Challenges
The challenge was simplifying complex cognitive signals into a clear interface that informs without distracting the driver.
What We're Proud Of
We created a system that makes driver attention visible and shifts safety from reactive alerts to proactive awareness.
Key Learnings
Designing for safety means designing for human limits. Simplicity and clarity are essential.
What Comes Next
Next we want to explore integration with real driver monitoring sensors and vehicle systems to test this concept in real driving environments.
