Garry's Mod Cinema

What it does

ViewParty enables players to share funny, informative, scary, or crazy videos they've found on youtube with their friends as if they're hanging out! Simply create a room and share the code with friends, and present all the cool things you found on Youtube.

How we built it

Unity, Netcode / Relay services, and a youtube-dl library

Challenges we ran into

Networking and setting up Unity Netcode / Relay services. Also finding youtube solutions, there isn't really a built-in youtube streaming option for Unity.

Debugging server issues was also really tough. It got to the point where we had to look at logs on these crashes with the resulting cause being a string stackoverflow!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Building the base game was a surprise for us! Even in 36 hours!

What we learned

Tons of Unity tricks and server stuff! We were relatively new in that department so we were pleasantly surprised with how far we got it too!

What's next for ViewParty

Models to make the game more lively, as capsules don't make the game that sociable. A custom relay server would be interesting for this project so we can add greater customization on how things communicate. Finally, a port to web would make this game a lot more accessible as no downloads are needed.
