Inspiration

As EV adoption continues to grow, one problem remains the same—finding a reliable charging station when you actually need one. Most existing platforms only show charger locations, but they don't solve issues like unavailable chargers, long queues, or limited infrastructure in smaller cities. We started thinking about how platforms like Airbnb allowed people to monetize unused spaces, and wondered if the same idea could help expand EV charging. That led to Vidyut—a platform where EV owners, charging providers, and even landowners can work together to build a smarter charging network.

What it does

Vidyut is a peer-to-peer EV charging platform that connects EV owners, charging providers, and landowners in one ecosystem. Landowners can list their unused parking spaces to host charging stations and earn passive income, while charging companies can expand without purchasing new land. EV owners can discover nearby chargers, reserve slots, receive real-time rerouting if a station becomes busy, and pay seamlessly through a vehicle-linked wallet. The platform is designed to make charging simpler while helping grow EV infrastructure in a sustainable way.

How we built it

The biggest challenge was balancing ambition with practicality. We wanted to include AI, real-time routing, payments, incentives, and a peer-to-peer marketplace without making the architecture overly complex. Another challenge was designing a system that supports three different users—EV owners, charging companies, and landowners—while keeping the platform scalable and easy to extend in the future.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that Vidyut goes beyond being just another EV charging directory. It combines peer-to-peer charger hosting, intelligent routing, a vehicle-linked payment system, and AI-assisted planning into a single platform. We also designed the architecture so it can start as a college project while remaining flexible enough to evolve into a production-ready solution.

What we learned

Building Vidyut helped us understand how to design systems for multiple stakeholders instead of a single type of user. We explored geospatial databases, payment workflows, modular backend architecture, and how AI can improve real-world infrastructure planning rather than just automate simple tasks. It also taught us the importance of designing for scalability from the beginning.

What's next for Vidyut

Our next goal is to build a fully working MVP with live station updates, booking, and wallet integration. After that, we plan to add AI-based occupancy prediction, smarter charger recommendations, dynamic pricing based on grid demand, renewable energy support, and eventually Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) capabilities. We want Vidyut to grow into a platform that not only makes EV charging easier but also contributes to building a smarter and more sustainable mobility ecosystem.
