Inspiration

Learning a new language mandates a lot of practice. However, continuously practicing your translation and listening skills can make learning a new language much easier. VideoLingo helps you ritualize this training whenever you watch YouTube videos and teaches you skills you will actually use: listening and understanding.

What it does

Many YouTube videos (including TED talks) have subtitles that are translated by community contributors. These are generally high-quality translations because they are cross-checked and reported by the many thousands of people who watch the video in with closed captions in languages other than English. We also maintain a list of words already tested so we don't reuse words. Then we present the person with a score so they can evaluate their progress.

Using our application and these subtitles, people can listen to YouTube videos while filling in blanks in the closed caption track in another language. This will test their hearing as well as translation abilities, helping them become more proficient in the new language.

Technologies we used

We used youtube-dl to fetch the video and the closed captions tracks. We used mpv to play and seek through the video and PyQt to create the GUI. We also used NLTK (natural language toolkit) to parse through the subtitles and tokenize the words. All the code was written in Python.
