Inspiration
I work a lot with video files, and have always found it tough to know how much of a particular video format will fit on a memory card or hard drive. It's also hard to keep up with all the new video formats out there. Enter the brand new, easy to update video file size calculator!
What it does
You can search through and select from over 2,000 unique configurations of video file formats -- from professional, raw camera files all the way to common YouTube formats. Presets for common formats in the TV industry are at the top and easy to pick with a click, but can be changed for each user to regularly access their most common configurations. Each calculation can be shared with a direct link so it's never out of date.
How we built it
We used various AI tools to try and gather up all the video configuration data we could from places around the web and then format it in a way that would easy to update in a front-end only tool with a flat-file database.
Bolt built pretty much everything -- main calculation page, then an admin interface protected behind a google login. Adding google analytics was a breeze with just a prompt. Then it was easy to add an about page, and even make it GDPR compliant -- all with Bolt prompts alone.
A one-click deploy with Netlify and a custom domain name completed the package and made it easy to get up and running quickly!
What was a challenge
We wanted to track the most popular codecs and configurations from all users of the tool, but adding a serverless way to track the calculations over time with persistent data was a challenge for us with prompts alone. We'll bring it back at some point, but for now, the tool does not track all calculations done and surface stats for users.
What's next for Video File Size Calculator
Agentic updates! Our next goal is to build an update agent that will automatically add new codecs and video configurations as the pop up so the system is never out-of-date with the newest camera formats and streaming service configurations.
