Inspiration
We wanted to build an app that would help everyday life. We found that many household items are left unused and get wasted. However, one man's trash is another man's treasure. Sharing resources among other community members could greatly reduce waste.
What it does
Vicinux builds a digital relationship between neighbors in a community. Users are grouped by zipcode and gain the ability to perform trades with each other. If a user sees a neighbor needs something that they have, that user can get in contact with their neighbor through chat and work out a trade deal. If the deal is not working, either trading user can abandon it and wait for someone else to fill the request. If the trade works out, a new chat opens and trade logistics can be determined.
How we built it
The full Vicinux stack was built on Ruby on Rails. We used semantic ui as our preferred css library.
Challenges we ran into
Working a big project as a 2 man team, we did not have enough time for deployment or API implementation, ActionCable, Javascript variations(Coffeescript, Typescript)
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We ended up with a cool UI, logo and intuitive design. We also managed to make a multichannel private chat using software developed for a singular global chat.
What we learned
We learned a ton of rails and some more javascript. We picked up some valuable team skills and developed strategies to cope with sleep deprivation.
What's next for Vicinux
We are thinking about making it a mobile app for iOS and android.
