VibeOS: Bringing the 90s Desktop Back to Life in Your Browser

Experience the nostalgia of the 1990s with VibeOSβ€”a fully functional, browser-based retro desktop. Edit files, play music, upload photos, chat with an AI assistant, and enjoy chunky 3D buttons, green terminals, and CRT vibesβ€”all without installing anything.

How I built it?

For the Kiroween Hackathon, I created VibeOS, a browser-based operating system that revives the aesthetics and feel of 1990s desktops, inspired by the classic TampleOS and Windows 95. Unlike static retro designs, VibeOS is fully interactive. Users can:

πŸ“ File Manager – Create, move, and organize files

πŸ–ΌοΈ Image Gallery – Upload and view photos in a cyan-themed gallery

🎡 Music Player – Play audio in a green terminal-style interface

🎬 Video Player – Watch videos in a retro red-themed player

πŸ“ Text Editor – Edit code with syntax highlighting

πŸ’» Terminal – Execute classic commands like HELP and SYSINFO

πŸ€– AI Chatbot – Converse with Vibely, the built-in assistant

How Kiro Helped:

Kiro served as my AI coding partner, scaffolding the Next.js project, generating functional components with my retro color scheme, and assisting with database setup and deployment. Tasks that would normally take hours, like authentication, Supabase setup, and error debugging, were completed in minutes.
