Inspiration

We were inspired by mental health awareness amongst people of all ages. Many people overthink before sharing their emotions even if they may need help. We have all had times or know people who have had times where we feel terrible, but never reach out for help because we overthink our emotions and end up feeling ashamed or like a burden. We wanted to create a world where that problem no longer exists and everybody can meet their emotional needs.

What it does

It creates an easy-to-use environment with a current set of 5 emojis representing different emotions one may feel throughout the day. It allows users to send quick, emoji-based emotional check-ins to their close friends through "Vibe-Alerts" to people in their circle who then receive instant feedback. The app fosters casual, low-pressure emotional connection throughout the day, without the formality of deep conversations, making it feel natural and easy to use.

How we built it

Using React Native and JavaScript, we programmed the app throughout the hackathon cycle, testing many different UIs and functionalities through real-time testing and integration.

Challenges we ran into

We experienced miscommunications via not organizing ourselves enough with roles and not discussing before making big changes in the main repository. As a result, we have deleted and modified files and folders that in-part had a negative impact our project timeline.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Although our backend logic isn't entirely flushed out and some functionalities aren't as polished as we intended them to be by this moment, the features we were able to flesh out came out even better than what we originally expected them to be, particularly UI/UX design.

What we learned

This was many of our group's first hackathon and our first time working together on a project. While we did run into obstacles regarding miscommunication, we now know better for the future and our confident in our abilities to perform even better and more efficiently in future hackathons, both individually and within our team. Furthermore, we were able to further enrich our technical skills and put to practice important concepts that may aid in future endeavors.

What's next for VibeCheck

We plan to continue development and have a myriad of groundbreaking features that we intend to employ into our app. We all believe in this idea and are confident that this was a great start of something that can truly revolutionize the way we express our emotions, no matter the demographic.
