VibeTrace — Understand What Your AI Actually Changed

The Problem

AI coding agents make it easier than ever to build software. They can implement features, edit multiple files, and modify existing systems in seconds. But as AI does more of the work, developers face a new challenge: understanding and controlling the changes happening under the hood.

A Git diff shows which lines changed, but it does not directly tell you whether those changes match your original instructions. An agent asked to improve a login screen might also modify unrelated UI components, backend logic, or database permissions. Some changes are harmless; others can introduce serious problems.

The Solution

VibeTrace is an observability and traceability tool for AI-assisted software development.

It helps developers follow their AI agents' work through a simple interface that brings together code changes, task context, and analysis. Instead of relying only on raw diffs, developers can inspect what changed, compare changes against the intended task, and investigate potential deviations.

What can you do with VibeTrace?

  • Track code changes: Observe file modifications and inspect Git diffs as work progresses.
  • Follow agent activity: Use recorded task context and activity to better understand the work being performed.
  • Analyze potential drift: Compare the intended task with observed code changes to identify possible mismatches.
  • Understand the findings: Review explanations and trace history to decide which changes need closer inspection.

VibeTrace is designed to support developer judgment, not replace it. Its analysis helps surface potential problems, but developers remain responsible for reviewing and accepting changes.

Designed for a Seamless Workflow

VibeTrace brings change tracking and analysis into one place, helping developers move from observing a change to understanding why it deserves attention.

You can get started by asking your AI coding agent to launch VibeTrace. For AI-powered analysis, you can provide your own OpenRouter API key.

Who Is It For?

VibeTrace is built for independent developers, vibe coders, and software teams that use AI coding agents to build and maintain applications. It is especially useful when agents make changes across multiple files and developers need a clearer picture of what happened.

What Makes It Different?

Git already shows code changes, and agent-tracing tools can expose execution activity. VibeTrace brings these ideas together with a focus on comparing the developer's intended task with the changes observed in the code.

The goal is simple: make it easier to notice unintended changes, investigate their possible impact, and stay in control while building with AI.

What I Learned

One of my biggest takeaways from building VibeTrace was learning how much planning documents can improve the AI software engineering experience.

I found that repeatedly moving through a loop of planning, documenting the next steps, implementing, and reviewing helped me work more productively. Instead of asking an AI agent to do everything in one large step, I could give it clearer direction, keep track of decisions, and make progress in smaller, more manageable stages.

This iterative approach made the development process feel more organized and seamless. It also reinforced an important lesson: building software with AI is not just about generating code faster; it is about creating a process in which the developer can understand, guide, and evaluate the work.

VibeTrace is my exploration of that same principle applied to AI-generated code: better visibility leads to better-informed decisions.
