Inspiration

I was inspired by the immense challenges veterans face when transitioning from military service to civilian life. We saw a gap between the vast resources available to veterans and their ability to easily access and navigate them. I wanted to build a single, intuitive tool to serve as a trusted guide for those who have served our country.

What it does

A veteran can input their Military Occupational Specialty (MOS), rank, and experience. VetNavigator's AI instantly translates this into civilian job equivalents.

How we built it

We developed VetNavigator on the Vertex AI platform, using Google Studio as our primary interface. The core functionality is powered by the Google Gemini API, which was integrated into a Python virtual environment. To display the user interface, we utilized the ADK (Android Development Kit) web viewer to render the virtual experience.

Challenges we ran into

I ran into challenges with the API getting the response from the LLM.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

On a personal level, I gained a much deeper appreciation for the obstacles veterans face. This project reinforced the importance of design; we learned that for a tool like this to be successful, it must not only be powerful but also empathetic, incredibly easy to use.

What we learned

I learned how to utilize Vertex API and Google Gemini API.

What's next for VetNavigator

This prototype is just the first step. We plan to expand VetNavigator into a comprehensive bot that moves beyond basic job information by eventually integrating a Job Board API.
