Inspiration
Our team was passionate about working in the global health track. We were inspired to take on the VA Global/Rural Health Challenge to help veterans know what care resources are available to them and applicable to them.
What it does
Veterans' Aide Assessment is a website that houses a screening questionnaire. These questions ask you to rate statements about your mental and physical health on a scale of Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree. Then, depending on your answers, the site will provide you with resources tailored to your specific needs.
How we built it
We made the site using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and we deployed it using Heroku. We used Node.js to upload the app to the web with Heroku. We also used Mapbox to assist in creating the interactive map that displays nearby VA locations to the user.
Challenges we ran into
We had difficulties getting the survey page to populate with our questions, in other words, getting our HTML files to talk to our Javascript files. One of our teammates is not on campus and lives in a different time zone, so we came up with ways to divide the work and meet together on FaceTime. We also lost an hour of sleep from Daylight Savings Time. Unfortunately, we couldn't get access to va.gov's API key since an application and company name was required to obtain it, so instead we used locations that had their GeoJSON data easily accessible.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
For two of our members, this was their first hackathon, and they did a great job! When we finally were able to see the whole website working, that gave us a sense of accomplishment.
What we learned
The amount of resources veterans have available to them can be overwhelming to know what's right for them. We recognize the problems they face in getting the right help.
What's next for Veterans' Aide Assessment
We would want to make our map functionality more extensive, and we had an idea to add visitors to the queue for a VA helpline call. We would also like to use va.gov's API service to allow us to provide the user's with accurate locations of their nearest VA.
