As a team, we decided to work on problem statement 5, as we all had an interest in learning how to build an app. No one on the team had worked on Android Studios before, and most have never touched java. After we determined where we would be fixing the problem, we thought about how. We decided that the best course of action was to ask as many vets about their transition as possible. Striking up conversations with locals, as well as creating conversation on Facebook. After a night of learning the fundamentals of Android studios and researching, a kind janitor came into our room to clean. He asked what we were working on and we told him about the hackathon. He then told us that he was a vet and told us of the transition he personally took as well as what he had seen happen with his friends. The biggest problem is just not knowing what is out there, or where to even begin, he told us. With this and the other researched information, we decided that the best way to move forward was to create an app that not only allowed users to search for nonprofits, but to ask them questions, and help lead them to ones that could be useful. Although the app is still in its early stages, we imagine something similar to the game 20questions, with a life changing connection as the answer. We then spent the weekend building the app, learning the ins and outs of app development.

What it does

It organizes nonprofits in a database and sorts them by a variety of categories, as well as showing the information of the database. The goal is to take the stress of researching off the veterans and giving them a new solution. It also does a questionnaire to help you find some possible nonprofits.

How we built it

We built it in Android studios.

Challenges we ran into

We were all new to android studio, and very new to java, so our main challenge was learning the new system. We found that we were short on time to add all the features we would have loved.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully built an app! It does all of the functionality on a base level.

What we learned

A lot about Android Studios, Java, GitHub, programming and teamwork.

What's next for VeteranDB

The sky is the limit.
