Inspiration
Given that 1/3 of Veterans in the U.S. live in a rural setting, rural health is a major priority. And given that veterans may not always have access to all their healthcare records at all times, it becomes difficult for them to get proper healthcare when in dire need. That's the reason we built Veteran Aid. Veteran Aid makes the task of storing healthcare records very easy.
What it does
Veteran Aid seeks to simplify the procedure for storing, accessing, sharing, and updating the medical records of veterans in rural areas. It is not only visible to the veterans, but also to the doctors that they share it with. All this is done through a beautiful website.
Veteran Aid is a secure platform as well. All of the data stored on the database is encrypted. Thus, we never expose our user data.
Additional Use Cases
Veteran Aid is not only limited to providing telehealth service, but can also provide information on resources Veterans can use and instructions on how to use them. It can also give them key insights on the most common problems and possible medications which can cure those problems.
How we built it
We built it using Python and the Flask microframework. For the frontend, we used HTML, CSS, and Javascript, along with Bootstrap, so that our application is responsive on mobile devices too! We have hosted it on a Vultr Server.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into some issues while configuring our database on our remote server. Most of us were used to the GUI of something like PHPMyAdmin. We had to quickly brush up our knowledge on how to create and configure tables using the MYSQL Command-Line.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Given the short time, we are extremely proud that we got our website and backend working. All of us were working on different aspects of the project, and that too remotely. Syncing up databases on all our local machines proved to be difficult. But we are proud to have finally made it.
What's next for Veteran Aid
This was a proof of concept we built in a matter of less than 24 hours. Next, we would like to improve on this and add more functionality, such as the feature for patients and doctors to have a live chat via websockets.
