Inspiration

I draw deep inspiration from Michel Gondry, the visionary filmmaker who transformed the medium through innovative techniques and creative problem-solving. Gondry's ability to craft magical visual experiences with limited resources resonated with me as I approached this project. Like his work, I wanted to find beauty in constraints and use them as creative catalysts rather than limitations.

What it does

"ושוב כמו אז" (And Again Like Then) is an AI-enhanced music video for the legendary Israeli artist Shlomo Gronich. The piece weaves together live performance footage of Gronich singing with AI-animated photographs, creating a dreamlike visual journey that explores the song's themes of romance, nostalgia, and life choices. The video captures the emotional depth of Gronich's performance while expanding the visual narrative through carefully crafted AI imagery.

How I built it

The creative process began with capturing Shlomo Gronich's live performance - footage recorded primarily on phone cameras with very limited material to work with. Recognizing this constraint, I turned to Midjourney to generate and animate a series of photographs that could complement and extend the visual storytelling. I carefully selected and animated these AI-generated visuals to match the mood, tempo, and emotional arc of the music. Finally, I used Adobe After Effects to composite the live performance footage with the animated visuals, creating seamless transitions that unite the real and the AI-generated into a cohesive artistic statement.

Challenges

The primary challenge was transforming very limited footage - mostly phone camera recordings - into a professional, visually rich music video worthy of Gronich's artistry. Rather than seeing this as a deficit, I embraced it as a creative opportunity. The scarcity of live footage pushed me to explore how AI-animated photographs could fill gaps while maintaining visual interest throughout the piece. Balancing the authentic live performance with AI-generated visuals required careful attention to ensure the final video felt cohesive rather than disjointed. Each element needed to serve the song's emotional narrative.

What I learned

This project taught me that AI tools like Midjourney aren't just production shortcuts - they're powerful problem-solvers that can transform constraints into creative opportunities. Working with limited phone camera footage forced me to think innovatively about visual storytelling, and AI became the bridge between limitation and artistic vision. I learned that sometimes the best art emerges not from abundance, but from the creative friction of working within boundaries.
