Inspiration
As students, we've all felt the disconnect between our academic life and the professional world. The most valuable resource any university possesses is the collective experience of its alumni, but that wisdom is often out of reach on vast, noisy platforms like LinkedIn.
Our inspiration for VertoPath was simple: to solve this "cold start" problem globally. We wanted to create an open network built on the high-trust foundation of university communities, allowing any student to connect with any alumnus for mentorship, regardless of which college they attended.
What it does
VertoPath is a hyper-focused mentorship and knowledge-sharing network designed to bridge the gap between education and career.
- For Students: It provides a platform to discover and connect with trusted alumni mentors for career guidance, access exclusive study materials and interview questions, and take quizzes posted by faculty.
- For Alumni & Faculty: It offers a streamlined way to give back by uploading high-quality academic materials, sharing career insights, and mentoring the next generation of professionals from various institutions.
- For Admins: A powerful Admin Panel allows for complete oversight, including user management, content verification and moderation, and community-wide announcements.
How we built it
This project was built for the Bolt Hackathon, and we fully embraced its spirit by using a prompt-driven development model. Our primary development engine was Bolt AI, guided by a human architect.
Instead of writing every line of code manually, our process was a continuous, agile dialogue. We would architect a feature, translate the requirements into a detailed prompt, and have our AI partner generate the database schema, frontend components, and backend functions. Our human effort was then focused on the most valuable tasks: debugging complex issues, refining the user experience, and making strategic product decisions.
Our tech stack is modern and scalable, built entirely on this new paradigm:
- Frontend: React (with Vite), TypeScript, Tailwind CSS
- Backend & Database: Supabase (PostgreSQL, Auth, Storage, Edge Functions)
- Development Engine: Bolt AI
Challenges we ran into
Every ambitious project faces challenges, and ours was no exception. Our journey was a masterclass in debugging and resilience. The biggest challenges were not simple bugs, but deep architectural hurdles:
Mastering Row Level Security (RLS): We moved beyond basic permissions to implement complex, multi-role RLS policies. We learned to debug and solve difficult issues like infinite recursion errors and cross-schema foreign key constraints, resulting in a highly secure backend.
Architecting an Idempotent Schema: Our initial ad-hoc approach led to a series of "relation does not exist" and "already exists" errors. We learned the critical importance of building a single, correctly ordered "master script" to define the entire database schema, making our foundation stable and reliable.
Solving Real-World Deployment Issues: We debugged classic Single-Page Application (SPA) deployment problems on a traditional host (Hostinger), configuring Vite build paths (
vite.config.ts) and server rules (.htaccess) to work in perfect harmony in a subfolder environment.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are incredibly proud of building a complex, full-stack application with multiple user roles in such a short amount of time. Our key accomplishments include:
- A Fully Functional, Multi-Role System: We successfully implemented four distinct user roles (Student, Alumni, Faculty, Admin) with unique dashboards, permissions, and user experiences.
- A Secure and Automated Backend: We built a robust system using Supabase Triggers for automatic profile creation and Edge Functions for secure operations like user termination and broadcasting notifications.
- A Polished and Modern UI: We designed and implemented a professional, fully responsive "glassmorphism" dark theme that provides an impressive and intuitive user experience.
- A Resilient Development Process: We learned to effectively partner with an AI developer, moving from simple commands to high-level architectural prompts, and successfully debugging some of the most complex issues a developer can face.
What we learned
This hackathon was more than just building an app; it was an exploration into the future of software development. We learned that the synergy between a human architect and a powerful AI agent is a force multiplier. It allows a small team—or even a single person—to build with the speed and ambition of a much larger one.
The ultimate lesson was in "thinking in prompts"—learning to articulate complex requirements with such clarity and precision that an AI could execute them. It's a new skill, and we believe it's the future. We're incredibly proud of VertoPath, not just as a product, but as a testament to this new and powerful way to build.
What's next for VertoPath
VertoPath is more than a platform; it's the foundation for a new kind of career ecosystem. Our victory in this hackathon is not an end-point, but the starting point for our ambitious next phase: transforming VertoPath from a network into a personalized, AI-powered career co-pilot for every student.
Our immediate next step is to build and integrate the Verto Co-pilot, an AI mentor, powered by Bolt AI, designed to provide scalable, one-on-one guidance to every user on our platform.
The Verto Co-pilot will focus on solving the most critical challenges students face:
AI Resume Builder: It will analyze a student's profile, coursework, and skills to help them craft a perfect, industry-standard resume tailored to specific job descriptions.
Interactive Mock Interviewer: Students can practice for interviews 24/7. The Co-pilot will ask relevant questions for specific roles (e.g., "Software Engineer at Google," "Product Manager"), listen to the student's answers, and provide instant, constructive feedback on their clarity, confidence, and content.
Personalized Exam Preparation: The Co-pilot will ingest all the study materials on our platform. A student can simply ask, "Create a quiz for me on 'Advanced Data Structures'" or "Summarize the key concepts in this PDF," and the AI will generate personalized learning tools.
Proactive Opportunity Engine: Instead of just letting students search, the Verto Co-pilot will actively analyze a student's profile and resume, and automatically match them with relevant internship and job opportunities posted by alumni in the network, sending them a notification: "An alumnus from your college just posted a role we think you're a great fit for."
This isn't just another feature; it's about democratizing access to elite career coaching. With the Verto Co-pilot, every single student on our platform, regardless of their background, gets a personalized guide to help them build their confidence and launch their career.
Ultimately, we are building the high-trust, focused community that we wish we had as students.
