Inspiration
VertiGrow was inspired by the growing need for sustainable farming practices and the beauty of vertical gardens and aquaponics. We wanted to create a game that not only entertains but also educates players on eco-friendly agriculture.
What it does
VertiGrow is a simulation game where players design, build, and manage their own vertical aquaponic farms. It challenges players to balance the symbiotic relationship between fish and plants to create a thriving ecosystem, all within a captivating pixel art world.
How we built it
We built VertiGrow using the Godot Engine, leveraging its powerful yet user-friendly features for 2D game development. Our team collaborated remotely, combining our skills in coding, pixel art, game design, and sound to bring our vision to life.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was accurately simulating the aquaponic cycle in a way that's both fun and educational. Balancing gameplay mechanics to reflect real-life aquaponic challenges, such as water quality management and plant health, required extensive research and testing.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of creating a game that's not only engaging but also raises awareness about sustainable farming. Our pixel art, which captures the essence of a vibrant ecosystem, and the positive feedback from early players on the educational value of the game are particular points of pride.
What we learned
Developing VertiGrow taught us a lot about aquaponics and sustainable agriculture. On the technical side, we deepened our understanding of game development, especially in creating educational content that's also fun to play.
What's next for VertiGrow
We plan to expand VertiGrow with more plants, fish, and eco-friendly technologies. We're also exploring multiplayer features to encourage collaborative farming and learning. Ultimately, we aim to partner with educational institutions to use VertiGrow as a teaching tool for sustainability.
