Inspiration

College is full of opportunities, but finding them isn't always easy. Between scattered event announcements, unfamiliar campus buildings, and trying to meet new people, getting involved can feel like a challenge of its own. As Georgia State students, we wanted to create something that made campus life easier to navigate and a little more exciting. That's how Verity came to life!

What it does

Verity is a mobile-first web app that brings campus event discovery, location exploration, and social connection into one place. Students can browse and filter events, save activities they're interested in, and explore campus locations. We also created a Friends prototype to demonstrate how students could eventually connect through shared interests.

How we built it

We used React, Vite, JavaScript, and CSS to build our interface, Auth0 for authentication, and Canva and Claude AI to help create our custom campus map. We wanted Verity to feel fun, welcoming, and easy to use, so we focused on a colorful, mobile-friendly design.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge? Having way too many ideas and way too little time. We had big plans for Verity, from interactive maps and social features to personalized campus experiences. But turning those ideas into a working application involved a LOT of trial and error. Some features worked immediately. Others required hours of debugging, rethinking our approach, or accepting that we couldn't build everything overnight. We quickly learned that having a great idea is one thing, but making it functional is a completely different adventure.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that we turned an ambitious idea into a working prototype while learning and troubleshooting along the way. Seeing our event discovery, saved events, authentication, and Friends interface come together made all the debugging worth it. Most importantly, we created something that addresses a problem we experience as students ourselves.

What we learned

Hacklanta taught us how important it is to prioritize, communicate, adapt, and know when to simplify. We learned that progress isn't always linear, and sometimes the best solution comes after several failed attempts. We also learned that a working prototype is better than a hundred unfinished ideas!

What's next for Verity

We're excited to continue developing Verity with a fully interactive campus map, live event updates, real friend connections, and personalized student experiences. Our vision is to make campus involvement more accessible, engaging, and connected. Verity started with a bunch of ideas, a little chaos, and plenty of trial and error. Now, it's the beginning of something we're genuinely excited to keep building
