Inspiration
Indonesia has always struggled with fake news. Growing up, we saw our loved ones become frustrated by hoaxes circulated on social media. This is an issue in our society as well. We believe that health is our most valuable asset, and as such, it is one of many elements we should prioritize. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw an increase in the number of hoaxes and misinformation floating on the internet. Many people make videos and share information that is not based on facts, and unfortunately, many people believe the deception. As humans, we understand that our demand for rapid answers sometimes outweigh our desire to be assured of the accuracy of information. However, we feel that an effort should be made to slow down the lie. We should and could give the truth more time to put on its shoes, which is why Veriflare was created..
What it does
Veriflare provides its clients in fast verifying health-related information by providing comprehensive explanations and verification from medical specialists. We will assist you in analyzing and verifying your data simply by typing or copying the text, video URL, or hashtag. All you have to do is wait, and we will do it for you. Not only is the checker tool available, but you can also stay up to date on the most current articles published and get alerted of all the latest trending news that has been validated by our medical experts.
How we built it
We expressed our ideas by constructing a prototype with Figma and one page for our key feature, the checker page, with React for better visualizations of how Veriflare would appear on a finished product.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges we ran into is analyzing the business. It is quite a challenge to build strong reasons on why we finally decided to build Veriflare, such as researching for facts and etc, as well as determining the target market. Researching for the backend technology is also one of the main challenges. We found several different good papers to how we should train the database, though due to the time limit sadly we could not dig further to it. Another minor challenge is finding the right time to discuss the ideas.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are more than happy that our pitch deck presentation and prototype could finish on time. We poured our hearts into it and believe that our idea could really be something that could help countless number of citizens in Indonesia. Also, we're happy that we learn a lot of new things during the process of this hackathon, such as researching on a bunch of different papers which leads us to get insights of hoax detection.
What we learned
We learnt how to better pitch our ideas to audiences. We do perform depth examination on how to better communicate our ideas to audiences or how to help them relate to or feel connected to us. We also learned market analysis and research, and how to communicate our problems in the form of pains. We certainly have space for improvement, but we would not have learned this without the hackathon.
What's next for Veriflare
We would like to develop our backend further to establish an API that institutions may use and incorporate into their websites. We are targeting the government and the media as our two main institutions. For instance, TikTok (media institution) can use our API to authenticate videos with health-related information, and verified videos will be labeled with "verified by Veriflare" to let viewers know that the source is legitimate. Kominfo (government institution) can also integrate our API to verify health-related information. They can take preventive actions by sending alerts to users who are potentially reading hoax articles on current trending issues, to prevent spread of panic and false information. So we are planning to switch to B2B2C model for our business.
